This past weekend was the EVO Championship Series, and if you don’t know what that is, it’s not that you live under a rock, but if you are at all into fighting games, you should FEEL that way. The best fighting game players from around the world gathered in Las Vegas this weekend to compete in the world championships for Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat 9, BlazBlue Continuum Shift II, and other older games like Tekken 6 and Third Strike.
Many of the favorites to win, such as Daigo and Poongko, did not take home the glory this year, instead being ousted by:
- SSFIVAE: Fuudo
- MvC3: Viscant
- MK9: MCZ|DMG Perfect Legend
Congratulations to the winners! However, in this writer’s opinion, the REAL star of the show was a young player named Noah, an 8-year-old with some real talent under his belt. Noah, who had defeated pro SSFIV player Gootecks at the Fight for Relief tournament, showed up playing MvC3 this weekend, and cleaned his way up to the top 48 before being defeated. I can’t wait to see where this kid is going with his talent. Amazing. Did I mention he’s 8 YEARS OLD?

That 8 year old could kick my ass at that game.
In some ways, that’s cool, but it also kind of shows off how a couple of memorized button mashes can give anyone the game in MVC3. I don’t like it for strategy at all, but enjoy it as a fluffy ‘Mash it till it works’ game.
