Why exactly is Gran Turismo 5 taking so long to develop?
Forza 2 has been out for nearly a year, and a half-version of GT5 is just now coming out tomorrow. I don't really understand what the hell is taking them sooooooooooooo long to make this game. I mean, in GT4 the developers had to use some really low level code in order to keep things snappy (I've heard much of the physics engine was written in assembly), but there's no reason PD should need to do that for the PS3. Most of the cars they are using for GT5 can have their models recreated from work they've done for GT4 cars. So yeah... what is taking them so long?

1. Polyphony either cannot work out their net code, or they're pushing the full GT5's date forward intentionally so they could milk die hard fans ( Richie ) out of money.
2.) How's assembly low level??? Just curious.

Polyphony has never been able to get their net code straight. Re: GT4.

Assembly is a step up from binary basically; you're working only with the CPU instruction set. ZSNES, for example, was so much faster than SNES9x on older machines because it was mostly written in assembly.
And jesus you'd think someone at PD would just open up a TCP/IP book.

I love Gran Turismo as much as anybody. But in terms of the competition, it's way behind.
Both Forza Motorsport and PGR do collision damage, Forza has been doing better customization since its inception, and PGR sets the standard for competitive online play. Like Q said, GT4 shoulda been online, but wasn't because they just couldn't figure it out.
But hey, since I'm not yet hopping on the PS3 bandwagon, they won't be milking me just yet.

Actually Jbrown... GT5 has been on the Japanese store since october. You could've gotten it much earlier if you didn't mind the japanese. But yes, it's finally available for download to us filthy american pigs.

I liked the Gran Tursimo line of games. But I'm not terribly excited for GT5 unless Polyphony does something incredibly awesome with it.Richie wrote:I love Gran Turismo as much as anybody. But in terms of the competition, it's way behind.

Purely in my opinion, after playing Forza 2 & PGR, GT doesn't hold my attention anymore.
Even if I owned the PS3, not sure if I would pick it up right away. I would (for the first time) rent it before I would commit to buying it.

GT5: JeRyu...It was really fun...the way you were playing with me...I LOVE the way you drive.
JeRyu: Yeah...
GT5: So...
JeRyu: Hm?
GT5: ...Will you buy me?
JeRyu: Sorry, I'm not ready for a committed relationship yet.
GT5: But! You can't!
JeRyu: I'm sorry, but we're just not on the same wavelength. It feels like we're both going in two different directions.
GT5: No! What makes you think that!?
JeRyu: I pushed right on the damn analog stick and you moved me to the left!
GT5: Well...about that...
JeRyu: And when I put the car into 3rd gear you automatically shifted it all the way back to Reverse! Wtf did you do that for!?
GT5: ...
JeRyu: I'm sorry...I'm returning you.
GT5: NO! Please! I can change!
JeRyu: No you can't! I don't any hacking accessories at all! You KNOW you can't change!
GT5: NO! Don't leave me!
JeRyu: I'm sorry...You just don't get me like Forza-
GT5: YOU'VE BEEN PLAYING ANOTHER RACING GAME!?
JeRyu: ...or PGR...
GT5: YOU'VE BEEN PLAYING TWO OTHER RACING GAMES!? How could you!?
JeRyu: I'm sorry...you just can't give me the same kind of pleasure that they do.
GT5: How can you do this to me!? I tried my hardest!
JeRyu: I'm sorry...but Forza 2 is just...so...amazing...it was so amazing that my 360 couldn't keep up with it and crashed because of it!
GT5: I'm sorry! I promise I'll get better!
JeRyu: Yeah...I've read the online message boards. That's a definite lie.
GT5: Please don't return me!
*JeRyu inserts GT5 into a paper slip and ships it back to GameFly*
