Yeah, there's a reason those file formats are called standards. What you have to look out for on OSes different from Windows are the ones that are proprietary Microsoft creations. Microsoft is very protective of it's WMV9 format, to the point where there are no codecs available for Linux. I know they made a Windows Media Player for Mac, though, so that shouldn't be a problem.
