So, it’s come to this. No, we’re not lamenting the fact that we’re writing about Resident Evil reviews rather than posting one ourselves, but rather we’re melancholy over the latest installment in the once-beloved franchise. Resident Evil 6 plopped on shelves this week (or in your mailbox) and the reaction has been polarizing to say the absolute least. In fact, most critical reviews have blasted RE6 for being a lavishly produced, yet hot mess of a game. A glance at the Metacritic scores will do nothing to ease your pain if you looked forward to a new entry in the franchise (sadly, like us).
If you’ve played the game, or read/watched any of the previews, or even sampled the recent demo, then you might’ve come to the realization that Resident Evil 6 controlled much differently than RE4 and RE5. This control difference is a main issue with many of the reviews. Characters move much more squirrely than the last few games, the 180-degree turn only moves your character and not the camera, the laser dot moves independently of the targeting reticule and all things considered, the game just FEELS strange.
Other issues reviewers have are with the four campaigns. While four campaigns and seven main characters definitely feels like more bang for your buck, we get the sense from the critics that RE6 lacks focus, most of the characters are forgettable and the story is more irrelevant then ever before.
Again, we haven’t played the finished game (yet) and are only summarizing key issues by the critics. We did play the demo and while unfinished, did seem “off.” RE6’s demo felt like a poor knock-off done by a smaller company, not a AAA player like Capcom.
