As we enter 2012, it is time for that yearly tradition gamers treasure: arguing about the best games of the previous year.  Over the next ten days, the Padinga crew will be sharing their favorite games over a variety of different categories.  These categories have been designed to force our wonderful staff to pick only one game each, meaning many great games will be left out in the cold.  We do this for two reasons: 1) to provoke thoughtful discussion in our comments about the games we forgot, and 2) to cause Mecha to have a heart attack.

Hit the jump for the second day, our picks for the best game to be released on the Playstation 3:

BREAK – SONIC GENERATIONS

I remember the first time I saw Sonic the Hedgehog.  I was at a friend’s house seeing the Sega Genesis for the first time, and he dropped their flagship game into the console.  I was blown away by the gameplay, the music, and the look of the game.  Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 came out, then Sonic and Knuckles, and we ultimately got to the Sonic Adventure games for the Dreamcast.. and this is where Sonic died to me.  The games since, save some decent handheld titles, have been horribly disappointing with flaws that only the most rabid fan could ignore.  Sonic Generations is the redemption of the Sonic franchise.  It is a celebration of everything that made Sonic great, and it will rekindle all your Sonic love in addition to providing some new memories.  I picked this game for Ps3 because the 3D on the system is absolutely spectacular.  The depth that it provides really provides and interesting look for Sonic, and you would do well to try it.

ANDREW- RESISTANCE 3:

As much as I love Nathan Drake, it was “Resistance 3’s” campaign that had my jaw dropping and my fist pumping the most this year. Ingenious weapons, “Half Life 2” inspired campaign, and strong multiplayer made for a killer package.

Q – LITTLEBIGPLANET 2

The PS3 has actually seen its fair share of exclusives this year, many of which have received much critical acclaim. For platforming enthusiasts, however, there’s no better PS3 game this year than LittleBigPlanet 2. Sure it released at the beginning of January, but I’ll be damned if it’s not still eligible. While the physics-based aspects of LBP may turn some off, the sheer creativity and customizability of it win out (not to mention the exquisite rapture of Stephen Fry’s narration). Move Support was introduced a few months ago, giving it a whole new dimension of creativity. And of course, one cannot overlook the multiplayer chaos. If you’re the sort who always dreamed of creating his own Mario game, this is the game for you.

ERIKA – LITTLEBIGPLANET 2

More Sackboy is always a good thing.  Always.

ERIC – BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY

To be honest, two months ago I assumed this category would be easy.  With Uncharted 3 out, how could it not be the PS3 Game of the Year?  I was shocked to find that I moved through Drake’s latest fairly quickly, while Batman has kept stalking my Playstation night after night.  Having collected all the Riddler trophies, completed all the side quests, and unlocked every upgrade, you would think I’m tired of Arkham City.  You would be wrong.

MECHA – METAL GEAR SOLID: PEACE WALKER

Being a port of a 2010 PSP game, Peace Walker really surprised me. Take everything you love about metal gear and add tons of exciting, innovative, and well made content that ranges from recruiting an army and sending them off on battles to building your own metal gear and you have what can easily be called the best game in the series.

Honorable mentions:  Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Portal 2, Ico / Shadow of the Colossus, inFamous 2
