Dear Reader,

Late-breaking news in the world of TMI, this new “Against All Odds” trailer for “Mass Effect 3” makes me feel…indecent. Ahem. Is it stuffy in here or what, could we crack a window or something? Must be those December heat waves Al Gore kept warning us about. Whew.

But seriously, what do we have here? Combat rolling, sprinting, an even cleaner HUD, and unmistakably sharper graphics. There’s also more of an emphasis on movement and action. I think we can tell that “Mass Effect” is continuing its retreat from RPG Town and into Actionville. And much as I know Mecha disapproves, I think it’s the right move

The original ME was spread too thin by ambition. Many balked at ME2’s paired down RPG elements, but the result was a better-focused, higher functioning game, not a buffet of unfinished ideas. Besides, if you want an RPG, go play “Dragon Age.” “Mass Effect” is a choice-based, character-driven action spare opera. God bless it.

    • It’s amazing! The sprinting and rolling look make it look like movement will be much stronger and more functional than it ever has been, the scale of the boss battle is great, and it looks genuinely better than ME2 did. I call those victories.

  1. This isn’t so much a trailer as it is gameplay footage of someone running through most of the combat (in which the AI has been tweaked to allow the hero to pass by) just so they can show you as much cutscene as possible in as short amount of time. I wouldn’t call that an emphasis on anything other than Action (yes, the capital is intentional). Reminds me of Michael Bay.

    • Reminds me of “OH SHIT THE VGAs ARE TOMORROW!? FUCK UHH JIM RUN THROUGH THROUGH THIS LEVEL AND GET TO THE CUTSCENE ASAP!!!. MAKE SURE YOU HIT RECORD.”

        • What we really see here is a more dynamic, movement-oriented level, as opposed to the stiffer, “oh here’s a cover spot” layouts that plagued both ME1 and ME2.

I agree it’d be weak for an announce trailer or an E3 show floor, but this is a pre-launch gooser, and as such I think it functions well.
