Its the year 20XX. Capcom, super-fighting video game machine, has just defeated Mega Man Legends 3. They get equipped with: Dead Franchise Blaster… and Rush Jet.

Yep, in a move that’s sure to upset fans of the Blue Bomber, Capcom announced (very casually) on their blog that the title didn’t meet their quality standards, and rather than rework the title, they have chosen to cancel it outright.

Servbot, we're letting you go. The economy is soft, you have to spend money to make money, yadda yadda.

Now, I’m not a huge fan of the Mega Man Legends series. The idea was solid enough, and I like the new characters it created, but the gameplay, particularly in the control scheme, was terrible. Still, it would have been interesting to see how the title had changed over the years. There was potential.

Despite my misgivings about the series, its really sad to see this title go. First off, because with the cancellation of Mega Man Universe which, despite the character model looking kind of like a floppy dead fetus when he jumped around, I was really looking forward to, there are no Mega Man titles at all on Capcom’s slate.  Secondly, the title was being worked with very closely with fan input from message boards, clubs, and fansites all bleeding into the MML development room, and had grown very important to the Legends community.

With this project down, and Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune having departed the company, it leaves Mega Man in a limbo with Capcom. They insist that our robotic hero will return, but, in what form?

Share.

He was probably conceived at a Van Halen concert and raised on a diet of sci-fi and horror movies, fed to him from a disturbingly young age by his uncle. A gamer from a young age, Dustin grew up on a diet of Atari 2600 and NES. He worked for 10 years as the manager of a game shop, and has owned and played nearly every system known to man. Somehow, this all led to a career in writing and collecting unemployment checks. Fitting choice of words as the screenshots I found of Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 looked like abortions. Coincidence?

Still, I guess it is a shame that fucker doesn’t wanna bust up robots worth a damn in 3D. I know I’d play it if it was good.
