Today is May 25, and guess what? It’s Geek Pride Day! Never mind that it sounds like it was drafted by the LGBT movement. Today is the day in which geeks around the world are encouraged to take pride in who they are, and to not be ashamed of that which makes them homo superior. Hmm, something about that doesn’t sound quite right.

So go out in public with your geekiest t-shirt, hell, go out in public IN COSTUME. Buy a game, movie, or other swag that shows your geek pride, run out into the streets and loudly proclaim: “I’M A GEEK AND I DON’T FUCKING CARE WHO KNOWS IT!”

Then go directly to jail, do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Geek Pride Day, May 25, was so chosen because of the commonality it shares with other “geek holidays”. Today is the anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars movie, which was released on May 25, 1977. It is also Towel Day, the day used by fans of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series to commemorate the books and their author, Douglas Adams. It is also important to fans of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld book series, as one of the significant holidays in the series is the People’s Revolution of the Glorious Twenty-Fifth of May.

Personally, I am a huge fan of both series of books (my wife gave me a leather-bound gold-leaf edition of the Hitchhiker’s Guide series as a wedding gift), and highly encourage everyone with a funny bone to read these books.
