So, for the first time in what feels like a decade, I’m not currently playing a racing game.  Yeah, no shit.

It’s an RPG, actually, Chrono Cross.  A product of the pre-Enix SquareSoft, notice that it got a perfect 10 from GameSpot.  If that’s not stunning enough, then you Final Fantasy VII followers will be shocked to learn that your Holy Grail got just a 9.5.  Put that in your materia and smoke it.

But starting off, not all was bitchin’.  Going through the intro FMV, the character introductions, the combat training, it all added up to about 90 minutes of game time before the first save opportunity presented itself.  Great, I’ll just punch up the save menu, and…
Oh yeah, you can’t save PS1 games to PS2 memory cards.  Fuck.

It’s 2 AM, I’m due in to work in four hours, and the only reason I’ve stayed up this late is to get to the damn save point.  Besides, who sells PS1 cards this late?  And no, I’m not leaving it on overnight, not with every other PS2 toasting itself.  But hey, that’s survivable.  I can skip movies and get it all back in half the time.  So a trip to CD Tradepost and $5.37 later, I’m back at the save point.  Slip the PS1 card into port 2, go to save and…
The memory card is full.  Que The Terrible Mr. Grimshaw.

That’s the great part of racing games:  You never have to know the pain of losing two hours of play, simply because you forgot one mundane detail.

BreakmanX (AKA Matthew Nyquist) founded BreakmanX.com in 2001 after having small video game websites since around 1996. Things really took off in September of 2002 when he started The Game Show with Richie. BreakmanX.com quickly developed a tight knit community of gamers as the crew covered major industry events and interviewed top industry talent. Break later went to the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts to get his MFA in Film and TV Production. He worked in Hollywood for seven years with people like Fred Roos (The Godfather Trilogy, Star Wars) and Dane Davis (The Matrix). He's now gone full circle and returned to Kansas to write and direct a feature film (EyesOpenMovie.com), relaunch The Game Show (BreakmanX.com), and spend his day time hours as an tenured Associate Professor.
