Skype

I don't know how many of you have heard of skype. It was recently put out by the same guys who created kazaa. It also uses the p2p technology that kazaa uses.

Skype works like an instant messenger, that uses voice chat. The best part about it, is that it has really high quality calls, and they are all free. The only downside I see is that the person you are talking to has to have downloaded skype and be on. They hope to soon make it so that you can call someone's home line using skype.

Another plus is that it is like a voice chat online. That makes it virtualy impossible to sue you, nothing is illegal. It may one day even completely demolish the phone industry all together.

Pretty cool. But you are right about the downside. I have enough troubles just getting my friends to get some sort of instant messenger.. I can't imagine the logistical nightmare trying to get all of them on Skype would be.

But for people who implement the uses of IM daily with other friends, it's perfect. Granted, I won't be able to get my family to load it, but I don't talk to them very much anyways. I've tried a few of the different telephone calling systems they have on computer, and a lot of them were worthless.

When I get home I'll have to try it out and see if it works.

Skype sounds pretty cool. Has anyone ever used IP-Relay? My friends and I have taken advantage of it numerous times. It's free and I guess it's kind of like a poor man's Skype. The user uses their computer and keyboard to connect to an operator and the user can tell the operator to call whoever. The operator will type out everthing the other person on the line says and the operator will say everything that the user types. We've made the operator talk about sex, say the "f" word, say the "s" word, and whatnot. Fun times.

I see potential Game Show usage here. God knows, Yahoo! has fucked us over enough, I don't see how Skype could be worse.

Would you be able to use Skype in games? Like Roger Wilco or Teamspeak?

I used to use Roger Wilco in gaming, and I found it incredibly useful.

Teamspeak works well, we used to use it in everquest a bit. The downside of this is that I don't like talking on the phone and I would rather type to somebody. This is better on many things, like when you are pissed off at somebody and you can rethink what you type before sending it. ... I'm sure there are other reasons, but that is the big one that pops up right now.

I happen to like Teamspeak a lot more then Roger Wilco.

Same principal though, and you can have all your friends join in.
Like EMP in Australia...
