Here's an article about the making of Halo. Some of the information mentioned in it might have been said earlier, but it's really interesting how this piece shows that the developers were able to learn from their mistakes, which is often what separates unforgettable games from simply forgettable ones.
One quote especially relates to this idea:
"The original tutorial was very, very bad. People would get killed while they were trying to learn. I actually had several play testers decide they wanted to quit playing the game and go home, rather than go through the opening level."
The article also contains acknowledgements of things that could have been fixed in the final version of Halo, but were unable to be accomplished due to time constraits (the recycling of levels and some issues regarding the Library level and the Flood are primary examples of this, as the author states). Anyway, just the fact that the development team can identify the mistakes they made and listen to the playtesters and fans should make Halo 2 that much more incredible.
