RE5 Demo

:happysad:

LOVE the co-op gameplay elements, graphics are fan-fucking-tastic, but it still controls like a WWII tank.

Given, it's the same basic controls from RE4, which were a huge improvement from previous games. But it's still the weak point in an otherwise stellar game.

Question: Is there side strafing and is there an EFFECTIVE dodge system?

One of the things that pissed me off was having a bunch of zombies running at you swing their axes and having no fucking way to dodge the thing other than to do a 180 and running away (meanwhile getting hit in the back). RE4 had the same control scheme as all the other previous games, only the camera was put behind you, and you can aim where you attack.

I liked RE4...but the controls were a huge issue, and strafing would be an amazing improvement. It was always awkward when Leon looked like such a badass doing everything to keep those damn parasite-infected Spaniards from attacking him whilst kicking their asses. Especially in the first town fight, which is probably one of my favorite moments in gaming history.

The only thing is...I kind of lose respect for Leon's badassery when every attempt to dodge an attack makes him look like a scared retarded child, seeing as the only way this is possible is to turn and run. Or deliver a swift kick to their mother fuckin' faces and unload your clip into their head(s). I guess the second option does make him look like a badass instead of a scared retarded child, but still...that only works on melee enemies.

I do have to admit it forces the gamer to become more resourceful to avoid damage though. Makes you use the terrain to your advantage, but there were certain points where this isn't possible. Such as nearly flat terrain with no doors, i.e. that giant room where you have to fight a shit ton of zealots and you only have a giant, open room with 2 pools in it to work with. Well, and 3 flights of stairs, a short hallway, and a tiny room which you ultimately trap yourself in as they slaughter you mercilessly. I never made it past that part...I have a permanent save at that section, and I'm never going to leave that area, as I'm VASTLY short on ammo for that part. I have more shotgun ammo than handgun ammo. Those 33 shotgun rounds run out fast when I have to keep Ashley safe though.

I got very off-topic...though I've had A LOT of unforgettable moments in that game. I think my favorite moment was when I kicked a door open with my shotgun, knocked a villager over, and then popped him in the head with my shotgun. Then I looked around the tiny room and discovered he was in the bathroom. There was also the time all the villagers were attacking this tiny house whilst you're in this 2 story cabin with Luis. I left him downstairs after he told me to go upstairs and I had to clear out a few villagers. I kept shooting them off ladders and knocking them over, shooting over and over again. I was starting to get bored with the repetitiveness. I thought 1st floor was clear since I covered all the windows and left Luis to fight. Then I turned around in the middle of knocking everything over and saw about 8 villagers bottleneck their way upstairs. I did what came naturally and randomly fired at them hoping they would die. Then they wouldn't stop coming, so I ran over to the stairs and saw a fucking line of them waiting to run up...

On a more on-topic note, do you have any amazing moments during gameplay to discuss with us Richie? I'm kind of curious to find out if there's anything memorable in the game. I know it's just a demo, but the demo for RE4 let you at least get to the first village fight, which is, again, a treasure to me, so I'm hoping to hear about something else on that kind of level.

The first mission available from the demo (and there's quite a bit of demo there) has a very similar situation to that village fight from RE4 - battle against the clock, with tons of baddies, terrain to use to your advantage, and ammo everywhere you're not. That was easily the most fun part of the demo.

The other notable scene is a forced co-op section: one player is solo in a room quickly filling with red-eyed crazies, the other is across the street with a sniper rifle. Alison got stuck solo, first time playing, and it all went to hell. Really hit me how un-intuitive the controls are while trying to explain, step-by-step, how to fire and reload. It's not a complicated thing, but you wouldn't figure it out on your own in a panic situation like that.

She didn't want to play anymore after that, and I really can't blame her.

Definitely not as straight forward as Left 4 Dead by any means.

So it's safe to say L4D is the best zombie game ever made ATM?

Agreed. It's simple. They're coming at you. SO... SHOOT THEM.

My PC is so lame I can't run it. Although I can run Counter Strike source and play on 60 player zombie server :doubt: It's choppy as hell wherever there's intense lighting. Whenever there isn't lighting, it runs as good as HL2.

My only hope is that someway, somehow, they make a ps3 port.

Played the demo, and wow, the controls are bad. It's RE4 with a titty lift basically. You can walk sideways, but at the speed of a snail, so it's still almost impossible to dodge chainsaw/axe swings at a certain distance. And there's STILL no good dodging mechanism for close up enemies. They need to do what Konami did with MGS4, and make the controls more accessible.

There's too many complicated button patterns for a game that is this chaotic, and requires quick thinking.

Just to be clear, we're still talking about RE4 controls, which are much improved from previous games.

I'm just dissapointed since everything else in this game is GREAT, but the controls are still weak. :?
