So I'm playing FF12...

Post by Vamp [Bot] »

How can a PS2 game look this good? I didn't even know this was possible. Like... jesus christ this thing looks better than most pr0n I've seen. My eyes keep getting tricked into thinking the in-game cutscenes are pre-rendered FMVs. The cinematography is also equally breathtaking; it's like watching Star Wars at times, especially the way airships are handled.

Also, after finishing FF6, it's nice to have voice acting, and a game that doesn't punish you for not grinding.

I agree, FF12 looks absolutely sexual. Its pretty amazing what they did the with Ps2. Makes me really excited to see what they do with the Ps3.

As I have yet to play too far in the game, what cinematography are you talking about? Good cinematography is one of my interests. I'd like to check it out.

The camera direction in just about every cutscene I've seen thus far has been pretty excellent; gives the feel of a AAA Holywood movie, rather than the B feel of most game cutscenes.

Also, you of all people I would have imagined to have beaten FF2... what gives?

Lack of time around the games release. Got around 8 hours in and then got completely swamped. I do plan to beat it though.

Camera direction isn't actually cinematography, though. Cinematography involves lighting, lenses, and whatnot to give the director the kind of photographic look that he desires for the film. The cinematographer is a photography expert. The cinematographer helps with camera movement in the sense that he prepares the scene so that the movement does not result in a poorly lit shot or out of focus shot, or horrible blur, but he does not contribute to the actual camera movements. Camera movement is all for the director who decides the most effective way to convey the emotion in a particular shot. Sometimes screenwriters write camera movements in their scripts, but those are mostly thrown away as screenwriters almost never dictate anything beyond the script. At best they are ignored. There are a lot of rules involved with getting everyone to get their job done without getting overstepped. There's actually a rule that doesn't allow the director to move the camera himself, but has to have the person who has that job to do it. Depends on the various unions involved and whatnot though.

Anyway, knowing a lot about film I find it really interesting to see various techniques and critiques carried over to Video Games. All forms of art share similarities so I think it is great that that kind of things goes into it. It would be especially interesting to see exactly who gets to carry out these classic roles in a different field. Obviously there's not someone setting up lights, but programming different light sources could be seen as a similar thing. Are the programmers the gaffers and whatnot?

What is even BETTER is that gamers like Vamp are actually noticing and enjoying these artistic nods to other mediums. I'm not sure how many other gamers notice them, but I bet he's not the only one on these forums. The more and more obvious that it is that Video Games are art, the easier it becomes to dissuade people against the Jack Thompson's of the world.

YES! excellent game! :D

You mentioned Star Wars

playing this game, I couldn't help but feel that I was playing like a "different dimension" of a Star Wars movie.

Vann - The main character is a teenage kid (kinda like luke skywalker)
Balthier - a sky pirate (Han Solo)
Fran - furry sidekick/co-pilot (chewbacca)
Ashe - a princess (princess leia)
Basch - scruffy old warrior (Obi Wan Kenobi)
the only exception is Penelo
Right?

But yes great all around game!

You lack an R2-D2...

You CAN'T have a comparison to Star Wars without R2-D2!!!!

LOL, You know what I mean.
Well, Fran has a bow and Arrow and Chewbacca had the crossbow :P
hehe, but allow me to clarify my previous statement; FF12 characters don't look like Star Wars Characters, they only fill similar roles.

I'm sure you know what I meant.

I wish I could think of an R2-D2 comparison. :doubt:

I hated FF12.

Yeah, I thought it looked kickass, and a lot of the cutscenes WERE like a AAA movie, and were captivating and appealing to major audiences.

But...the story and gameplay sucked. You basically ran around set maps in the game with absolutely no overworld map to split everything up, and it felt as if from the very beginning, it was a single-player MMORPG. Would it really have been so hard for them to make respawning enemies? I mean, I kind of get sick of running out of an area and then back in just so I can get a big chain combo.

It's like the RPG version of Gears of War :/
