one year and a half later, Sony has done something right. This is from the Game Developer's Conference (GDC) 2008.

edit: Sony also has a good humour when it comes to this subject:

This has been a good week for sony. In-game XMB is completed, Home is coming out soon, and HD-DVD has been demolished. Things are finally starting to turn around. And I love how microsoft acts like they couldn't give two shits that the format they supported is now finished.

I think this will be a good year for Sony. You are going to be most happy with your shiny black console this year.

From what I've read, Microsoft was never a HUGE fan of HD-DVD to begin with as Peter Moore said in 2006 that if Blu-Ray won Microsoft would probably make a Blu-Ray add on for the 360. Their main goal was to have both formats die so you have to buy all your content on your 360. My main qualm with HD-DVD was the inferior bitrates and such. I just like to have the best hardware win so that way the best software will find it.

BTW, I love your sig!

More news from GDC. Wow, this is getting better and better for Sony. Sony is pretty much owning GDC, and they're actually using their time wisely and doing smart things at the conference. Sony unveiled PhyreEngine yesterday, basically it's an engine that makes programming and compiling games on the ps3 about 10 times easier than it currently is. Sony's plan is to have developers use this to make multiplatform games on ps3 first, and then translate and port it over to the Xbox 360, as you get better results that way.

another thing sony is doing is encouraging all developers to make their own games to submit to Sony and be uploaded to the Playstation Store. They've also been showcasing The near-completed version of Home. Man, good news like this makes me wonder if Sony was drunk/high/in a coma for the past year before this. Good work Sony, this is what you should've been doing from the very start. Please keep it up. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Eh, Microsoft is letting students download a bunch of dev software for free, including Visual Studio 2008 Professional, Windows and SQL Server, Expression Studio, and (most importantly for budding game devs) XNA Game Studio 2.0 and XNA Creators Club (normally $100 a year for the Creator's Club alone). Now if only they'd add Dalhousie to their list of supported universities (I hate Canada).

It's amazing what finding your self on the bottom will do. Every company that has been on top has had a similar experience. Nintendo treated all 3rd parties like ass when they were (hmm, does this sound familar to anyone) and SEGA let themselves completely self destruct. Sony's coma, good way to put it by the way, was simply their acceptance of their success. Once it was taken away they realized they were going to have to work like hell to be successful again.

All the stuff you presented is great stuff. It is going to be interesting to see if all the analysts were right about this being Sony's year.

As long as Sony keeps out of trouble and not advertise a white ps3 and labeling it as "Better than a black ps3". It's great to see that Sony is finally improving PSN. Who knows what other unexpected changes might occur. I hope they completely overhaul the Store, and replace the web based interface with something that blends in more with the XMB interface. Maybe they might even add backwards compatibility to 40gb ps3's. I'm excited.

And to think, you all hated on me for holding out on a PS3 until now.

I'm an early adopter. I take pride in having something before it gets all popular. Don't worry though, I still like it when it IS popular too.

if you're referring to in game XMB, it's basically a way to just access the main ps3 menu during a game, without having to quit the game. while it's not really new per-se, since microsoft has had a way of accessing XBL in game since day one, it's still something that would pretty much push PSN that much closer to XBL, if not better. I'm just glad that I won't have to listen to crappy game music or quit a game to access the PSN options. I think that Sony has a few hidden tricks up their sleeves. I really hope that one of them is a revamp of the awful HTML based store. As for home, I REALLY hope they get creative with "Accomplishments" (Achievement points on the Xbox 360 ), and make it so that you can buy stuff with the accomplishment points you get. It would definitely take the whole achievement business to a whole new level, and add some meaning to it. The potential behind the PSN/Home update that's coming out is just exciting.

Fanboy, their store isn't really HTML based, it's PHP and JavaScript based, most of it being rendered in HTML as that just happens to be the web standard. In this case, Sony wants to keep cross platform compatibility of their service so that people who own a PSP but not a PS3 can still make purchases on their PCs.
