God Damn It ATI. Fuck you.

Post by WiizerFanboy »

so i've been having this problem for quite some time now, and I'm pretty fucking sure it's ATI's Dec. 2007 driver, because all is well when I remove it. Whenever I try to run any 3d app or even watch a video in Windows (with the Dec. 2007 Driver: "7-12_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_55811" ), It's all fucked up. The Textures in apps that use 3d are all fucked up, and there's even textures missing. and with videos, there's just Lines in columns passing vertically through the video. But all is well when I remove everything that's ATI. I've JUST reformatted my entire hard drive containing windows yesterday. It's either the drivers causing problems or my video card itself. The Odd thing is that there are no driver problems in Ubuntu. The card is detected, the driver is automatically installed, and videos work fine. (cant say anything about games since there aren't really any 3d apps I use on Ubuntu ). oh, and also, I get an error associated with "MOM.exe" whenever I boot up windows XP.

anyone know any WORKING windows XP for a Radeon X300SE ?

EDIT: I'm beginning to think there's no hope for this video card, I tried a driver called "ati_omega_xp2k_48442", and it still gives me the same problem. Here are some screenshots to show exactly what I'm talking about:

This is me Running ATITool when I click the "show 3d view" button. (I haven't overclocked it at all)

It SHOULD look like this

Almost all the icons have these annoying little lines passing through:

I can't figure out how to screenshot video, but it's like the ones above, only they're sort of green, they're a little more distanced from each other, and they're larger, I just don't know what to do.

ATI does indeed suck when it comes to drivers, but as I told you a while ago, this is a DirectX problem.

I just don't understand how, i've reformatted the entire hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP SP3, I don't get how it could have the exact same problem as before.

Vamp are you sure that the probability of it being the video card's fault is 0%?

Hm well maybe it's not DX then, but if the problem isn't happening while rendering OpenGL as you describe I really doubt it's the video card.

well... now that you mention it, Ubuntu was working just fine with it for a while, but the columned vertical lines started showing. However it doesn't do that with videos when I set the output module to OpenGL in VLC. I'm really leaning towards the thought that it's the video card. Thats it, It's time to get an 8600/8800 GT! If THAT doesn't solve the damn problem once and for all, I've been waiting to build a new PC anyway, I'll just recycle some current parts.

I thinking of the 8600:

although, I'm going to have to upgrade to Windows Vista : /

Lol, where do you get that? You can run Windows 3.1 with an 8600 if you are so inclined. Moreover, nVidia still makes graphics drivers for XP so you can enjoy any of their cards without Vista.

Really!? I thought you absolutely needed DX10 to use it, and because DX10 is only for vista ( or did I miss something? ), I didn't think I would be able to.

It supports several versions of DirectX... in fact I'd wager to say it supports all of them except the yet-to-be-released 10.1.

I won't be ordering it until I'm settled into the new house though. What do you think, would it be able to do some crysis'ing at atleast medium settings?

also, some people are saying this would be a better choice:

But, I don't know, it's more expensive and my experience with ATI has not been peaches and cream so far.

The 3850 is good, but honestly if you're going to go high-end get an 8800 GT 512MB.

all right, so it's either the 8600, the 3850, or this 8800:

Honestly I would go with the 8800. You are future proofing yourself with that card. You can play games with the 8600gt but not the high setting you can with the 8800.

Have never owned a ati car so can't really say how good/bad they are, only what I have read.

If you are going to grab a 8800gt then go with the 512mb version not th 256 version. If you want to play crysis at medium setting or higher like I have said go with the 8800gt.

I picked up the BFG 8800gt 512 at best buy a month or so ago for about $225. Browse around and you can find one semi-cheap. Also the new 9000 series is rumored to come out in the next month or 2 so expect the prices on the 8800s to drop in price if you can wait.

hmm, well like I said, I won't even be ordering until everything is settled and working in the new house, so I'll be waiting a while anyway.
