Macs in Movies

Post by loosecannon »

Has it occured to anyone that all movies and/or T.V. shows use macs in the scenes. Every actor or actress is just playing around on a mac. Does Apple have a deal, or is the highest bidder on these shows or does Hollywood just seem to prefer the mac?

That occured to me, too, but I've seen instances of both PC's and Macs used in different movies. It's also interesting to see movies like OfficeSpace where they have they're own operating system. Not Mac, not Windows, kinda both.

And then there are movies like Hackers, which, technically speaking, are a load of crap.

I think Mac's get more movie spots because they look aesthetically pleasing.

Most products you see on the screen are there because a company payed to have them there. Hacker's, for example, in the the scene with his mom in the beginning of the movie (sorry to be unspecific cant remember exactly) you'll notice that from every angle they shoot the scene you can see the label that says, "Coca-Cola" on the 2-Liter. Since macs hold a very small percentage of the market, I'm assuming their trying to gain a cool factor by buying these spots on film.

The answer is: all of the above.
Apple pays for some of it, some of it is just used because it's cool-looking and/or stylish, and then again sometimes it's just whatever computers they were also using for working on the movies themselves. It's more cost effective to bring over one of the studio's own computers for one day of filming than it is to get a new one.

I'd say most companies would have a props department with just empty shells that look like real computers... That's saving even more costs.

what sparked my post was that i watched "About a Boy" and it shows is Apple G4 with the 20 some inch flat panel, all plugged in with wires visible and it was fully functional. And then in Austin Powers:Goldmember, an apple laptop.

omg i know it's so wierd like every movie uses mac's for their computers, like the guy in Independence day used a Mac laptop to crack the alien computer, Mission Impossible used a mac laptop too and i know this was paid by apple because they had commercials that were Mission Impossible/Apple Laptop crossovers

I though Mission Impossible Used Intel laptops.. didnt the black hacker guy say something like "I assume we'll be using the experimental 586 laptops?" 586 being the next step up from 486, which was all the rage at the time.. Am I just imagining this quote, or was it form another movie? Or maybe thier was two laptops.. that makes sense too.

I think he did say that, but they were still using Macs. Basically, Hollywood is a bunch of dumbasses, especially considering 586 never existed. (At least as far as I know.)
