Wii Balance Board

Post by Mericks »

Well, to be honest, 1 of the better things about Nintendo's conference this year is, in my book, the balance board. Not WiiFit itself, but the Balance Board is an interesting piece of technology IMO. It has been confirmed to be very versatile and the video for Wii Fit did show off a lot of stuff.

For those who don't know, it's a board that you stand on. It can very accurately decipher where you shift your weight. Even the smallest shift affects it. I won't lie, it is possible to completely screw with this thing. It'd just be kinda hard and probably take a while to figure it out.

Anyway, I just wanted to state my opinion and say I can't wait to see what other games can make use of that. I can already think of a few things to do with it.

A combo of the Balance board, Nunchuck, and Wiimote would make for a LOT of control. I's like to see it implemented in a regular, non-fitness game. :)

If that's the case, with as lonely as my nights are, I'm an ideal Air Force pilot!

Ahem...Anywaaaaaay...

The Wiimotechukboard combo would be pretty kick ass. Way too many possibilities for me to think of alone. That's almost...impossible! I think of everything! I'm all-knowing! Wait, no I'm not!

How much does that beast cost? I'd hate for Nintendo to make me run out and buy it :(

Nintendo is easily propelling us into the age where video games are very very very realistic instead of complete pieces of shit with good graphics.

I wonder what kind of simulation the balance board could be used for.

Boxing is a must, especially after that arcade boxing game where you actually move your body to dodge. Course, playing this game may lead people to thinking they can kick everyone's ass because they're opponent is too stupid to kick em in the head if they squat down like a damn chicken laying an egg.

Skateboarding definately. Just about any sport involving a board of some type. Doesn't look wide enough for DDR. Imagine playing an FPS and actually having to step to take a step.

DBZ power up instructions: Plant your feet on the far ends of the board, hold both the nunchuck and wiimote vertically in the air and scream like a bitch. - This is after the Wiimic is invented...probably called the wic. xD

WTF? To pass this level I have to scream for, like, half an hour. :x

Why doesn't the other guy just attack me? :?

Typheus, I wouldn't call the games realistic. I'd call them immersive. The last thing I ever think of when I play a video game is how realistic it is.

Example:
Not once did I even consider Zelda as a realistic game in any way whatsoever.

Example:
Never did I see any Metroid game as realistic. Even moreso with some of the new features Metroid Prime 3.

Example:
Mario.

Example:
Never did I see a Halo game as realistic. Especially the 1st 1. Something tells me that if Earth made an army, they would get a bunch of mentally retarded people with guns and armor and throw them out there. Also, I find the concept of aliens creating weapons that shoot so many varieties of beams at us, as well as powering them with batteries, yet, for some odd reason, these aliens never figured out how to defend themselves agains our bullets.

Example:
Final Fantasy.

Example:
Ninja Gaiden. Come on. That game's not realistic at all. Look at the way that guy runs on walls AND ceilings!

Example:
I

Example:
Need

Example:
To

Example:
Stop!

Example:
Help me!

I do agree with Mericks about the realism issue. The last thing that I care about is realism, except for the sports genre. There's a certain amount of pride in making a realistic game, but true realism isn't really that practical. Imagine how many hours of war are just spent walking around patrolling with little action. That doesn't make for a good game.

Just like directing, the realism must serve as a tool to suspend the audience's disbelief. Basically, one must have to make the unbelievable, believable, by throwing in certain elements that connect us with reality. If everything was completely foreign and unrealistic then we would have no grounds to understand the game, but if it is too realistic it is incredibly boring.

Like most things, this is on a continuum, there is ultimate realism on one side and complete fantasy on the other. Games fall somewhere in between there and where one tends to fall is purely a matter of taste. I like games that are more towards the fantasy realm, but that's just me.
