WTF?

You know Dragon Quest series? The one that's always been true to its roots keeping with the menu oriented turn based battles it's had since the original, but always managing to grow on this concept and make it more in depth with each new game. The series that has always had you playing for hours at a time to meticulously level all your characters and get more gold to finally be able to afford that Dragon Claw or that Magic Armour. Remember Dragon Quest 8 and how beautiful it looked on PS2? Well.... that's all out the window now.
Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Sky is now a DS game... and an action RPG... with co-op wi-fi multiplayer designed to be the staple of the game. Most sane people had it pegged as either being PS3 or Wii game, but the sequal to Dragon Quest 8 being on a handheld less powerful then the N64 with only midi sound? As a long time fan of the series, all I can really say is WTF Enix?

I can safely say Elite Beat Agents has better than "MIDI" sound. Come on, Factman, get it straight.

Pretty soon, turn based battles will no longer exsist. God damn I'm so sick of action RPGs.

There have already been videos released with the sound and music of the game included. DQ8 has a beautiful fully orchestrated soundtrack while this game does only have midi sound, reverting back to what DW7 offered.
In any case, with a maximum of only 128 MB available on the cards for the system, any non-midi based music would have to be compressed to shit, as was done in EBA.

Sounds like fear of the unknown.

Sounds like Square Enix is throwing Dragon Quest down the crapper.

If true, then I dare say that this will be the FFX-2 of Dragon Quest.

The DS isn't unknown.
And I share in the disappointment.
Maybe this will just be a side story to the REAL DQIX?
Like the FFXII DS game coming out.
That's gotta' be it, right?

I wasn't using the phrase to be defined literally, and I was definitely not saying the DS is unknown.
I'm saying it because he thinks the game is going to suck because it's not following his tried-and-killed method of turn-based battles over and over and over in the DQ series. God forbid if a game tries to do something DIFFERENT anymore...

I know what I like, and the chances of my liking this game to the same extent I liked DQVIII are very slim based on what I'm seeing. I'll still like it, mind you, but I do think it will be a step down.

No, it's already confirmed to be the next in the canon series.
And seriously, I'm not saying the game will suck; I am saying that putting this game on the DS is the wrong move for the series. Furthermore, I don't care what they do with the crappy side games for the Dragon Quest series (witness the Torneko dungeon crawler and the monster series games that I own), but when the take they next game in the main series and make it look and sound like shit next to DQ8, and turn it into a dime-a-dozen action RPG more akin to FF: CC or Champions of Norrath, then there is something seriously wrong going on.
Another example: I like Metal Gear Ac!d even though it is a huge departure for the Metal Gear series, yet I would still be royally pissed if Kojima had announced it as MGS4.

Very good point.
I'm still hoping for a console DQIX game
in addition to the DS one, though. I mean, they can't be THAT stupid... right?
I'm just going to refuse to believe it, simple as that.

I don't have a problem with the game being on DS. Portable handhelds are always fun when you get stuck traveling a lot...near or far from home.

I honestly don't think anyone here is getting mad about them being "different." I think everyone here is getting a bit upset that Square is making the next game in the DQ series a little pissant DS game that seems to have little put into it.
