Revolution Revealed

This product is intended to be a revolution, not simply an evolution. Such a lofty statement, possibly the highest one can make. Did Nintendo do as it said it would?

Main Controller Features

3D Pointing. Sensors understand up, down, left, right, forward and backward.
Tilt Sensitive. Controller can be rotated or rolled from side-to-side.
Buttons Included. Has a trigger on its backside, face buttons, and a D-Pad.
Multifunctional. Has an expansion port which can be used with different types of controller peripherals. Analog stick with two trigger buttons planned for left hand.
Wireless. Totally wire-free. Currently there are no details on the max distance, source or power, or otherwise.
Rumble Built-in. Included as a standard in all the controllers.

It is definitely not a mere evolution like the 360 and Ps3. Very risky move played by Nintendo. But, that is certainly what they do best. The NES was an insanely risky move in its time, and I think it was their best product. They have finally gotten back to their old self and actually innovated. No one is doing the shit they are. Looking at the picture the first time I couldn't help but think... what the fuck?! But, the more I think about it the more I realize is that this is what gaming needs. It needs a kick in the ass like this. It needs this design that looks like Miyamoto took an overdose of shrooms. It needs to be risky.

It is going to hurt them with third party, obviously. Sony and Microsoft have both been fairly conservative and merely upgraded their systems. Nintendo went nuts.

I'm really excited to try one out. There hasn't been something this new and innovative since the NES, and Im really proud of Nintendo for going for it.

The controller is definatly cool. I think it'll come down to how game developers will take to it.

At this point, all I have is questions. I'm sure it's probably gonna be an awesome new way to game, but we'll just have to wait and see how it all comes together.

My gut says - what the fuck kind of controller is that supposed to be?

Of the new controllers I like the look of the Xbox 360 one (where they seem to have taken on board the complaints about the original controller and made improvements) the PS3 controller looks lame to me too... *sighs*

I dunno, it has the potential to either be really cool or totally suck. It's nice that they're being innovative and all, but frankly I'd have more confidence if it didn't look like a TV remote control.

It is a little odd they went with that.. but keep these things in mind; on its side it feels like a NES controller, it is motion sensored, can have an unlimited array of attachments, and you can always use a GCN controller with it. I love it when people take chances. I'm REALLY excited :D

What excites me the is potential for it to fix the "controlling an FPS on a console sucks" problem. Hell, maybe it'll even prove superior to the all-powerful mouse-and-keyboard setup.

We'll wait and see.

It sounds better once you read about the tech demos.

I'm making a few predictions.

1) The revolution will have little worthwhile third-party support.

2) It will have a few great, innovative games, made mostly by Nintendo themselves.

3) They won't sell near as many consoles as Microsoft or Sony.

Hey, that's the same as my predictions for the Gamecube! :P

I'll admit I have a lot of questions and possible issues, but if one company can pull something like this off, it's Nintendo. This is really what the industry needs, a company who has enough guts to try something different instead of just evolving the last 2 generations. Don't get me wrong, some games on the 360 look good, and the PS3, but they'll probably just be prettier graphics, smoother frame rate hopefully, and maybe better online play.

Nintendo started this with the DS, surprising everyone and it's turning out not to be a bad little system at all. I think it might take a solid efford from Nintendo to push the Revolution as something new and cool, and it will take a little time, but I'm excited for what Nintendo could do with the controler.

My main worry is with 3rd party support. It's going to be harder to release multiplatform games if Nintendo's controller is so different, but then again, there's some decent support for the DS, and it's getting better. My other minor worry is for more complicated games like Zelda. The motion tracking is cool, but I want to play a long game, but don't want to just wave my arms around for hours on end. But when I heard about how the remote part could be snapped into a standard controller shell with the functionality of the remote, that sounded cool.

Even if this whole concept flopps, which I hope it doesn't, I still have to respect Nintendo for trying to inovate at a time where there isn't as much as there should be.

wraith kind of said what i was thinking. third party might be an use but multi platform shouldn't be out of the question if nintendo makes an attachment that allows normal controller function, like someone stated about about using the GC controller.

also look at the ds, people said no one would want to develop for it because it would be too much pressue to use all the functions. but which handheld has better support? the psp or the ds? i think developers will be pumped to do some cool new things. but thats just me.

Anyone see the trailer of people playing the game? One guy playing a music game by using two controllers like drumsticks, one guy looking all samurai and using a controller like a sword, I'm kinda' looking forward to the Rev now. :P

It's the same kind of excitement I felt when the DS was announced. So many new, interesting possibilities...

yeah, like Weezer using it as a thrusting motion for his import sex simulation game "The Erection of Eric Rose"
