Classic FPS gaming

Post by Wrath »

With E3 just around the corner, I doubt many people are thinking about or playing many classic games now, but I've been on quite the classic PC gaming mood lately. I've been playing a lot of the original Doom and Duke 3D lately. I'm guessing a lot of people know about these, but I'll list them anyway.

JDoom or Doomsday

While waiting for the XBox release of Doom 3 and the console versions of the originals, I've started playing all the classic ID games with this little utility, and now I can't stop playing. This add-on works with Doom I and II, Heretic, and Hexen. It adds higher res graphics and effects tot he game, making them not look so old, extra gameplay options like jumping and mouse look, and built-in net play for deathmatch and co-op. My room mates and I have been playing this a lot lately.

I remember hearing Jack say how much fun he was having with the original games on the XBox, so I thought I'd post htis. It's a few years old but still is hella fun to play, and I'd be open to play some co-op or deathmatch, just PM me. The only down side is that it likes to crash under XP when exiting the game, often causing a bluescreen. I've somehow made it work fine on my machines, but I thought I'd warn you. My room mate is still having this problem, so if anyone does know how to in fact fix this problem I'd like to know.

Duke Nukem 3D High Resolution Pack

This is similar to the JDoom pack. It ups the graphics a bit, adds some more functionality, and built-in online play. After playing Doom for a while, I had this urge to play some Duke 3D, since Duke Nukem Forever is pretty much never coming out, in my mind anyway. I had a blast back in the day playing this, and it's still quite fun. Again, I'd be open to some multiplayer.

Anyone else have some cool suggestions for some classics like these? I'd love to play a better working version of Carmageddon again under XP...
