Gamecube loses 2nd Party developer (Edited by Break)

It's official: Nintendo just lost one of their best second party developers.

Silicon Knights, developers of Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, has broken off its ties with Nintendo, and will be able to develop games for all of the different systems now.

What does this mean? We'll find out at E3, but don't be surprised to see Too Human running on Xbox hardware this may, or even a video of Eternal Darkness 2 for PS2. :D

I know I keep saying stuff like this, but when is Nintendo going to wake up and start making some good business decisions??? Letting one of your best developers go is insane! *Sigh* Oh well...looks like this just means that we'll get really cool games on other systems, not just the GC now.

And for the record, Eternal Darkness is still my #1 gamecube game. It is the shiznit.

Damn that sucks. The Gamecube is the only current console I still have. It sits proudly next to my N64 and SuperNes. Oh well.. I'll just wait for the next shitbucket Nintendo console and pump a bunch of money into it, eagerly awaiting mediocre games and Mario Sunshine 2!!!

Actually it has nothing to do with Nintendo making bad decisions. It has everything to do with the initial contract period expiring and the fact that Nintendo can't for the life of them attract an older audience...even with valid attempts like the deservedly acclaimed E D.

If I were SK, I would quit too. Why limit myself to the Dakotas when I can make a widely accepted game for the entire country? Nintendo had 2.5 years to prove it could sell PS2-caliber millions for an install base. Nope.

Please use the Gamecube system bashing forum.

Why should this be in the system bashing forum? It's news!

System bashing forum is for people saying GC sucks because it has no games and the discs are tiny; not for people saying that one of Nintendo's 2nd parties ended an exclusivity agreement with them. The subject line was a poor attempt at humor.

I might have turned the topic towards system bashing with my post. Inadvertantly I'm afraid. Mine too was a poor attempt at humor. I'm still a Nintendo guy in my heart. I can't even allow myself to purchase another brand. Too bad most of them are better these days... come back glory days of SuperNes!!!

What games did Silicon Knights have planned that have been cancelled because of this decision?

I suspect the answer is none, thus I don't really care. Silicon Knights made ED, which was good, they'll probably just go multiplatform now. I don't really care if PS2 and X-Box get there own copies of ED.

Of course, I don't really give a shit about any of the consoles any more. Aside from looking forward to the few franchise must-haves (Metroid, Zelda, Mario), what I'm really looking forward to is the DS, which could potentially rock shit. And also, Half-Life 2, which can't possibly be bad, because even if the gameplay sucks the engine will be awesome and tons of cool mods will be made for it (CS-2 anyone?).

Thank you for moving this thread. Nintendo losing Silicon Knights is news, but I think titling the news "Gamecube is Teh Doom3d!!11!1!" makes it less news and more a mockery towards Nintendo. I know you don't have the most positive outlook on Nintendo's decision's and their future, but don't make all of your treads in the Gamecube forum ones that put them in a negative view. I know you're a fan of Nintendo and you like their games, try and show some support of them without always having to criticize them. I would do the same for you, but I can't because I'm not a fan of Microsoft or the X-Box. Do what I can't do and be the multilateral game fan.

I didn't move this thread...I think Break got a bit mod-happy. I'm going to move it back.

*edit* I would have moved it back if I knew how...

Then please change the title.

Edit: Aww screw it. Do whatever you want. I'll probably do something or probably have already done something dumb like this anyways. What a moronic hippocrite I am. Who am I to tell anyone what to do, especially on an internet forum?

If I may ask, what inspires one to have a fierce loyalty to Nintendo? Nostalgia? Mario? Zelda? Tradition? Purple cubes are sexy? Weeze (or any Nintendo fan) allow me a glimpse inside your head; where does the loyalty come from?

Yeah, all of those are right on, except for maybe the purple cube.. mine is silver special edition. I guess it stems from all of the great games in the past. As a kid my parents were very gung-ho about NO VIDEO GAMES. Finally my brother and I were able to wear them down and one beautiful Christmas morning we opened a Super Nes with Mario, F-Zero and Street Fighter II. My life hasn't been the same since. Play some Zelda and a ton of other really great games (original Mario Kart!!) for the SNES. Then came the 64 with Goldeneye and more Zelda.. I had some fun there too. I'm not quite sure why.. but I just like the Nintendo. Mostly childhood nostalgia I suppose.

Nintendo loyalty is pretty much like the first mover concept in business. Nintendo was the first company to deliver breathrough video games like Mario and Zelda. (Sorry, Pole Position, Combat and Burgertime were important but weren't exactly revolutionary)

So yeahm it's nostalgia and the fact they have original quality ideas. The problem is, even though they still put out new innovations like Pikmin, we all kinda get the feeling they are scraping the bottom of the barrel. Plus it's just hard to see the lack of games coming out and the lack of thrid party support. I honestly weep for Nintendo.

Oh I do as well. They're the only console company I feel any affection for whatsoever. But like you say, a lack of games, especially exclusive games, lack of 3rd-party developers, and a seeming unwillingness to embrace the M-rated market is seriously hurting them. Nostalgia won't make them money for much longer. We've been over this before, how they need to wake up, but seeing people rejoice over their misfortunes really saddens me. They've got to get edgier, they've got to get a piece of the 18-25-year-old market.

*Edit* Holy shit, I've got 601 posts. That's crazy! The only people with more are Trelane and the Breakman himself! Wow.

I must have the following franchise titles:

Nintendo:
Mario Kart
Mario (except Sunshine)
Metroid
Zelda
Smash Bros.

PC:
Half-Life

Any questions?

(Also, I really hate Sony's controller it's a giant turd, X-Box's is good though.)[/i]
