UT2k3

Post by Evilmagicpirate »

To try and stir up some conversation... I got Unreal 2k3 two days ago and finnished the single in one evening. I was a little disappointed. The game wasn't especailly fun, and the lightning sniper gun kinda sucks, Plus they ditched Assult games, which were awesome. Im pretty glad I didnt pay for this game and instead got a pirated copy..

I'm glad evilmagicpirate is here. He's like a mad post making device. He says things that make people mad, and then they reply. Way to go!

Ya, I'll agree with you on the Lightning Gun: it did blow, especially over the downright awsome sniper rifle from the original UT. The loss of Assault wasnt so bad, seeing that it was made up for in Bombing Run. But I dont see how the game can be counted down too much seeing that the multiplayer is a whole other part of the game. And all the other weapons were extremely well balanced, and a blast to use in combat. I'm kinda sad you pirated it, but it's probably better you found out you didnt like it prior to spending money on it.

I havent played any Multiplayer against humans yet, only bots... It just seemed to me that the bots on the opposing team were always very smart, and the bots on my team were very dumb.. Maybe I just didn't have a very good team.

I'm not sure if having aliens or humans or robots on your team makes a difference or not, but it wouldent suprise me if it did. And you must give it up for UT2003: it does produce some damn smart bots .

i haven't played it but based on my experience with the original Unreal Tournament, i would guess that the multiplayer is pretty much the entire game.

Yeah, UT2k3 is really all about Multiplayer, and the single player game is really just multiplayer with bots. In Single Player, you make a team of Bots, and use that team against other teams of enemy bots. Every Bot has stats, like Agility, Accuracy, etc.. and apparently the bots will level up if you use them enough. Anyway, I used the same bots for the first half of the game, and I saw no evidence of leveling. Then for the last half of the game, I optimized my team with better bots, but it still didn't make much of a difference. It seems that the enemy bots were pulling off trickey moves, dodging everything I threw at them, and generally giving me a hard time. Then the bots on my team where running around in circles like retards, moving into the path of on-comming rockets, and generally giving me a hard time.

Maybe I just had a team that didn't work well together or something. I had a mixture of races in it. I was very impressed by the enemy AI, especailly how they cunningly used the Translocator, and at times they worked together very well as a team. I still miss Assult mode; Overlord was a favorite at LAN parties, but Bombing Run is unique and fun. I still think the game would have been better with both modes though.

I wouldent worry too much about the single player team thing. From what I've heard, its mostly luck in getting the right team together. And The Siege is right about how most of the game is multiplayer (which is a blast, by the way). Assault will be sorely missed, but you can bet your ass that someone in the mod community will at least try to make a Assault mod (if they havent already).

I was able to get my hands on both the beta (EMP were you around when Jim had it or did you leave) and the release copy. I would have to say that of course the release copy is a lot finer, a lot more tweaked, but a lot more harder to work with then I want a game like UT or Quake to be. I like the game to be simple, pick a map and gun down your enemy. Which, you can do, but there is so much iteration to make it more "fun". I am the person that frankly hates the WC3 special maps (unless I am at a LAN party and can shout across the room at my friends) and hates playing on public servers for CS for the fact that playing with random people prohibits good strats to be used, and now, the game that I could rely on going in and just shooting people has added strategy to it's mix.

On an up note about the game, with all the new features, I am impressed with the graphics end. Even on my TI-200 :'(, I could tell that these weren't your momma's ole graphics. Considering I just scored a job at Blockbuster, I might be able to pull down enough skins to get myself a new card in the future. Now the big question, should I get the GeForceFX or the Radeon 9700... hmmm (I think I will make a thread)

I understand what you are saying about UT2k3 being more complex than you want it to be. They did have the simple Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, but I felt they weren’t as fun as in the original UT. So if you really want fun, you are forced to play with CTF or Bombing Run, which are more complex, especially BR. I didn't so much mind the added complexety though.

I have this suspicious feeling that the entire game would be much better if the Sniper Rifle hadn't been replaced with the Lightning Gun. I think the weapons in UT were superb, the ones in UT2k3 were just mediocre.

And yes, the Graphics are the best thing Ive seen since the alpha release of Doom3.

Wow! This map looks like a nintendo game, complete with big green Mario-pipes.. But its actaully a map from UT2k3. Im downloading it now from here

The map is probably the best map Ive played for the game, better than the ones it ships with. The map really chews up your system though.. I need to bump the setting down to play it.
