Re: On the topic of FF7
This has nothing to do with hating something because it's popular; I gave it a chance, it didn't live up to the hype, and it didn't leave a good taste in my mouth. The difference between hating something because it's popular and hating something for a reason is HAVING A REASON. I've clearly outlined them. I'm not saying <emo>"Man, all you conformists can go shove it"</emo>, I'm saying "the game is a bitch to play, it looks terrible through the eyes of someone not living in fantasy land, and I would much rather play a remake." See the difference? No? Then you're hopeless.
Let's use Halo as another example just for the sake of presenting this from another view. I know several hardcore Halo 1 gamers, and I used to routinely play with three of the top five finishers at WCG Halo competition for Atlantic Canada. They really loved Halo 1, and in Halo 2 they really, really wanted to see Halo 1 online since playing Halo 1 through XBConnect was awful. They bought the game, and all of them despise it. Why? "Buh, must be because it's too popular. Durrrrrr." No. They gave it a shot, it didn't live up to the hype, and they consider it a molestation of everything they loved in Halo 1. To them, the balancing is all wrong, the matchmaking made things horrible, and the online mode was full of idiots. They basically felt the whole experience was (and I quote) "noobified". Even one who continued to play it because he loved Halo so much just swore the whole time about how awful it was. So on comes Halo 3, a game which for all intents in purposes is all the more popular than Halo 2 ever was. They hate it even more. Why? "Dur. Gee gollly it must be because it's poopolar". Pipe down you! It's because it's an even greater molestation of the game they used to love, and even after hoping against hope that Halo 2's crappiness was caused by Bungie rushing it out the door, the game didn't live up to their expectations for whatever reason. They didn't hate these things because they are popular; they just did not get what they wanted in them.
I hate plenty of things that aren't popular. For instance, Hitler. Or howabout, for a game example, Silent Hill 4 (piece of trash that was...). I also like things that are very popular, like Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed. Want more evidence that I don't hate FF7 because it's popular: I'm going to play the fucking prequel, and I want to play the inevitable remake.
Yeah, I dislike some popular games, perhaps because I just don't get or agree with what's so great about them even after playing them. For example, Resident Evil 4. I found it to be way too easy, not at all a "survival horror" game as much as it was yet-another-action-game-staring-a-cardboard-cutout-cast-with-a-crappy-story, and in general I would have greatly preferred to see Mikami carry on with the excellence set forth in his Resident Evil remake. That's why I don't like RE4. It has nothing to do with all the people who cream their pants at the very mention of the game; I have my motherfucking reasons.
Jesus, I wish people would try to read what I say before they generalize me into the camp of over-long short haired side brushed banged pricks.

Vamp we're not allowed to not like FF7, we HAVE to love it more than our own child. : /
I never said I hated FF7, from what i've played of it, it was just 'ok' to me. It didn't feel like it was the greatest game of all time to me. so, whenever a game receives a shit ton of hype, if I disagree with it, will I be regarded as a rebel? are personal tastes not allowed anymore?

Anytime you say something that's not the majority, be prepared for a shit-storm. I always gaged a pissed off response to myself as doing a good job. Obviously there's a lot of passion on both sides here.Wiizerfanboy wrote:Vamp we're not allowed to not like FF7, we HAVE to love it more than our own child. : /

And Muteki, the hatred of Halo and FFVII is not necessarily because it is popular. It can intensify that hatred, though. People hear how great something is, and when they think its not they hate the game more than they normally would since they are bewildered at the game's following. I purchased Halo 1-3 and beat them and thought they were ok. There are a lot of problems I point out, but I think they're at least ok games. Not worthy of their praise, but definitely decent games.
Any game is not everyone's bag, regardless of how great it is. I like FFVII for all the deep symbolism and stuff it got me into as well as the characters and my love for the materia system. People like everything for different reasons, and different things strike different chords with different people. One problem with forums and the internets is that people tend to argue opinion for fact, and that tends to piss off everyone that has a different opinion. Play what ya like.
Re: On the topic of FF7
Well, I had a big long post typed out pointing out how I didn't mind if anyone hated popular things, giving the example that I hated Super Mario 2, but then went on to state that hating it simply because of graphics is asinine, especially when the game was made around 8-10 years ago (FF7).
So, Vamp, people don't think you're a dumbass because you hate a popular game. They think you're a dumbass because you're hating on it for graphics. I have to agree with em.
Wiizer...go back and reread this whole damn topic, THEN try to repeat your last post.
Also, Vamp, a lot of good Halo 2 player I've talked to think Halo 1 was for pistol noobs, so go figure. :/

But I've also said it's not "just" graphics. Think of all that a remake would bring about: more expressive characters, voice acting, and quick transitions in and out of the frequent battles; these things along with prettier visuals would make the experience more enjoyable for me. The presentation as a whole would be better, and since I really only have time to play games once these days and not look back, I want it to be the best experience it can be.
I've held out before on games that didn't even offer graphical updates. I remember holding out for months on playing Valkyrie Profile because the Lenneth remake was on its way. I stopped mid way through FFT the day I heard about the War of the Lions remake. I've still got an old save in Star Ocean 2 at level 35 or so that I'm not even touching because Second Evolution will be coming out eventually.

Re: On the topic of FF7
Vamp, imagine if you will that Super Metroid was an SNES launch title. It would not have been anywhere near as good as it is if it was released that early. Why? Because the knowledge of the technology was limited when the SNES first came out. So over time Nintendo learned tricks to help them get more out of their games. Guess what? It is the same basic principle for FF7. It was released early on so Square's knowledge was limited, so they couldn't do a super ultra amazing job by today's standards, at the time though, they were simply breathtaking. (As a side note, if you would just play the game you would realize that voice acting would not be possible without adding another disc or two) Would you not play Super Mario Brothers simply because they didn't cram as much stuff as they had in SMB3?

Re: On the topic of FF7
I'm not playing the game in 1997; I want a 2008 experience, and I don't really care what the game was like then. The same game, in any case, with better graphics is a better game, and I know that better game is coming down the road at some point no matter what platform it is on. I'd rather play that game than play a game where the characters don't even have elbows. If Twin Snakes hadn't turned into the fucking Matrix I would rather play that to the original MGS where characters don't even have mouths.
Re: On the topic of FF7
Vamp would ignore Super Mario Bros. entirely and just play Super Mario Bros. 3 just because it's prettier...Muteki wrote:Would you not play Super Mario Brothers simply because they didn't cram as much stuff as they had in SMB3?

Mericks, you're assuming he's interested in Video Game history.
