Not for very long; MS has cancelled the Sidewinder line.
I repeat: why are you people trying to convince me to not get an Xbox? My mind's made up; no one's gonna change my mind now.

We're trying to do this because what you want to do is illegal. Not only that, but going online with a hacked box is the stupidest thing you could do. If you really want to play divx files, MAME, and ZSNES, then just get a freaking computer and get some sidewinders, or some logitech gamepads. Plus, I don't want to listen to you whine and complain that Microsoft deleted all of your files the first time you log into Xbox Live with the modchip disabled. If you even post here about it, I'm going to lock the thread, and include a very funny message that says the equivalent of "I told you so." So for the sake of Microsoft, and the rest of the forum users here, don't MOD an xbox. Software or Hardware. It's illegal, it voids your warranty, and you're gonna have more problems with it than you think you're gonna have.

You make good points, but none of them really apply.

Why is it illegal? I already said I'm not going to be using it to run stolen games. You can even do surprise checks of my hard drive if you want.

One big difference, as I've tried to say before: 19" monitor, 27" TV. That's a big difference. Besides, I'd prolly get 3 or 4 Xbox controllers anyway, when buying all those extra Sidewinders or Logitechs would add up to a lot of extra spending, more than the cost of the modchip, certainly.

Don't worry about that; after that little exchange of posts with me complaining about MS deleting files, I've realized that there's nothing I can do about it. I'll just make backups of my divx files and ROM archives so if they do get deleted, I can replace them easily. You won't even hear any bitching from me.
I'll do some more research about the fallibility of the modchips, but I'm pretty sure that it's entirely possible and safe to have a modchip (switched off, of course) and run Live.
So just relax! :^) I'm not doing anything that could hurt Microsoft, and I'm going to make sure I won't be doing anything that could hurt myself. Everything is coolsville.

It's illegal because you are modifying the hardware in the case of the Xbox. That's why it's illegal. And 4 logitech controllers are going to cost you just as much as 4 xbox controllers.
One last thing to ponder on: Don't you think that Microsoft knows about this exploit and is pretty close to stopping it?

Except I'd get the 4 Xbox controllers anyway. Buying four logitech controllers on top of that would be extra.
And if you know something I don't about MS's capability to detect modchips that are off, let me know and that just might alter my decision. I don't think they can detect it, though; the modchip is effectively disconnected when it's off, so I don't see how it'd even be possible for MS to try and detect it.

I do not get where you think that it is not illegal to change the pattoned hardware that microsoft designed for a specific reason: Play games and watch DVD movies. Q, you have shunned the XBOX away from you life for a long time. What makes you think that you are an XBOX hardware expert where you can pull this stupid task off. What if something goes wrong? What if you ruin your newly purchased XBOX.
Dear Microsoft,
Hello. My name is Rurouni Trelane, I recently purchased one of your XBOX systems and now it does not work. I dont understand. All I did was open up the case and add a little chip to the hardware to make it do things that you do not want it to. Anyway, there was some smoke and I think that it is now broken. Would you please send me a new XBOX so I can ruin it again.
Thanks Bunches,
Rurouni Trelane

So, what does the mod chip allow you to do that is completely 100%, unfallably, legal?

Can't say that there is anything. There's lots of things that are questionable because the companies they "hurt" overlook it, since it makes them money... But MS doesn't overlook copied games, justifiably.

I just convinced him not to do it in a phone call.

Lemme quote the DMCA for anybody who thinks that it is okay to modify thier hardware
(This is not an endorsement of the DMCA, but merely why modchips are illegal.)
`(f) REVERSE ENGINEERING- (1) Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (a)(1)(A), a person who has lawfully obtained the right to use a copy of a computer program may circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a particular portion of that program for the sole purpose of identifying and analyzing those elements of the program that are necessary to achieve interoperability of an independently created computer program with other programs, and that have not previously been readily available to the person engaging in the circumvention, to the extent any such acts of identification and analysis do not constitute infringement under this title.
Same reason why the dude who created DeCSS got pwned.
