The Wii is gonna need some games with depth to get my attention. Some grit, some emotion, anything but the "kooky fun" theme they seem to be leading with.

I can't think of any games coming out for the Wii that meet that criteria.

Well, maybe one. "Sadness." But I haven't heard much about that game in a while.

It's a black-and-white WWI-era rat-frightening simulation. :P

Sadness, Disaster, Project H.A.M.M.E.R.? Anything here?

Personally, if you're playing your games only if they're gritty or emotional instead of fun, throw away all your systems, and spend your life in a movie theater.

Keep in mind I'm not saying that games can't be gritty or emotional, but a real game wants them to be fun above all else, otherwise there's not much a point to them being interactive.

EDIT:

Vamp, you don't realize that fucking millions of Wii owners are people that don't like the bloody or emotional shit that all the "cool" teenage kids like. Millions of Wii owners are moms, dads, grandparents, etc. too. People that didn't play games before BECAUSE they were too violent. Dewy's Adventure is 1 game that appeals to those millions of people, and it SHOULD appeal to millions of hardcore gamers if for no reason other than the fact that Konami is making it.

Unless Solid Snake jumps out from a bush somewhere in Dewy's Adventure, I don't even care if Konami is making it. Konami also makes a LOT of video poker machines out here and I'm not addicted to gambling either.

So you're saying that if it doesn't have the proper name or characters in it, it HAS to be bad?

You've got to be fucking kidding me... How close-minded can you get?

Quite a bit. And with the way that game looks, I'd say it's gonna blow.

Hm...you sound like the stereotypical, hate anything new gamer that only likes a game where you can kill people senselessly.

I don't play games purely for fun. I play them for a challenge, to be provoked, to be moved, to see and hear a great story unable to be told in a book, movie, tv show et al, and of course just as something to do. If I wanted to just have fun I'd go out somewhere with friends, or sit at home beating my meat all day long. :P :P :P

Fun is only fun for a little while in my world.

Emotional attachment will make me love a game forever.*

*See ICO.

Ico was fun you bastard, Verence...

Anyway, Vamp, there's not a story that can be told in a game that can't be told in a series of books, episodes of a TV show, or a series of movies. You just need to take out the interactivity, and then put in set actions and responses instead. It's just the fact that stories can be told differently in games.

Also, Atticus, just so you know, GTA fans are the worst games of the worst. They like:

1) repetive, boring missions
2) repetetively shooting people
3) crude gestures

All for no reason at all. GTA is the worst series EVER made in video games. EVER. I mean after playing 1 of those piles of shit, I actually started smelling something funny. Turns out the console was getting hot and burning shit doesn't smell any better than it does normally.

Also, Verence, Vamp, if the story in games are so important to you, I take it neither of you liked any games from the NES era, at all.

ICO wasn't that fun. ICO, and Shadow of the Colossus, were a breathtaking experience with gorgeous visuals and either challenging puzzles or challenging boss battles.

Also, I do not in any sense of the word -believe- that the story of MGS2 could possibly have been told properly with any other medium. The subplot of control vs free will, the true sense of completion and the final message of life not just being about passing on your genes would have been butchered as anything but a game.

And yes, I've played plenty of NES games and let me tell you this: by and large they aren't as good as the games of the last generation.

I've been arguing with Vamp because he's an asshole. Also, I'm not a Nintendo Fanboy. My only personal opinion in games is that Sony is the WORST company ever put in the gaming industry and everyone in their corporation should be crucified upside down.

Now, Vamp, I can clearly see you just flat out hate anything good. That's good, because I don't want bad people liking good things. Then I don't feel regret for having similiar interests with them. Too bad that's only the case sometimes though...

I didn't find ICO fun (in my sense of the word at least).

It was emotionally, visually, and aurally engrossing. I loved it.

When I say "Fun", I mean a more childlike sense of amusement instead of simple enjoyment, as I think you use it.

That may be where we're getting turned around.

Also, I never got into games until the really good RPGs started coming out (Chrono Trigger, FFVI). Before that there were very few games that held my interest for very long.
