Somehow I doubt he was saying "Christ" in Japanese.

More likely some Japanese figure of speech that thaty couldn't traslate well, so they just picked an english one.

I just bought my first Samurai Champloo DVD and downloaded the fansubs. I'll also be catching the English dubs on Cartoon Network. I think the dubs are just kick ass.

At any rate, I've discovered some thing about Samurai Champloo that you might find interesting (I did, at least):

First and foremost, all the English text that you see, anywhere period, such as the opening, episode titles, the to be continued signs, are all from the original Japanese version and completely original. Geneon didn't do it.

Secondly, the series take place in 1615 or a little onward. I've watched several episodes ahead through the fansubs and in one episode we see some guys mistaking Osaka Castle for, believe it or not, Edo Castle, and the castle was destroyed (still smoking, actually). Osaka fell in 1615 when it was captured by Ieyasu. Ergo, we're witnessing a 17th century anime. Sweet.

EDIT: Further episodes (18 and 22 most of all) suggest that the series took place roughly somewhere in the Genroku era (1688-1703). I was a little off by accounting only the Osaka incident, but I was still right in assuming it was during the Edo Period (1603-1867). Special thanks to Kittenbitten.

That's it for now. I'm looking forward to the dub of the latest episode tonight! Oh, and by the way, I have to admit that they picked the perfect voices for each character. There's very little difference, range wise, between the Japanese and English voices. I though that was really cool.

I liked this episode because it has more of my more favored, yet at the same time more hated endings. I can't really explain it. Sure, it's kinda evil that he got killed in the end, but at the same time it's a "reap what you sew" kinda thing with that moral lesson attached.

I also liked how they kept the "bitch" fest at the beginning of the show. Hehe.

Shinsuke's voice was played by voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch who is known to most as Vash the Stampede from Trigun. He's also played such roles at Maiku from Please Twins!, Claus from Last Exile, and Kiba from Wolf's Rain. Worthy of note to us old people that grew up with and actually watched Power Rangers, Bosch played the role of Adam Park, the Black and Green Rangers (Original season 2 and Zeo/Turbo respectively).

Catch the episode on Thursday! It's when they repeat Adult Swim from the previous Saturday. Also, I edited my post two up with more info on when the series generally takes place.

sadly enough I can probably remember most of the episodes out of most of the seasons...I stopped watching around the space station saga...right after the space saga... (refering to power rangers if your confused) That dragon thingy looked like a rip off of godzilla XD

I was just thinking about the one episode that had the European in it....dude Japanese people needed to get over themselves if thats what it really was like. Its like "Hey you European bastards your not welcome here....o your an important person with money o thats different!" I dont mean to...(o hell I hate using hood terms) "diss" Japanese people but godamn.

For extremely large number of years, Japan was cut off from outlying countries and the Emperor decreed that any foreigners are to be killed on sight by anyone who recognized them as a foreigner, or they'd be held accountable as helping them and killed too (if they were ever found out).

The Emperors of those times, the Tokugawa family, were scared that if new countries influences were to become apart of Japan that they'd loose their solid hold of their position, and those loyal to the Emperor, such as his vassels or guards and what not, supported him without question and enforced this policy.

At one point in history it was finally decided that trading relations with the Dutch would be opened only in a single port city in Japan, and only those with specially signed papers were able to get off of that ship without being killed. Needless to say the papers like that that went out were extremely few and even more far in between.

It was all about the Emperor trying to keep what he had that it was like the way it was back then and not necessarily the people themselves. The Tokugawa's two century policy of isolation was dissolved/eliminated during the Bakumatsu (Meiji Restoration) in 1868.

Well I cant wait til thursday to see that umm..."bitchfest". Umm just out of curiousty what exactly do you mean by bitch fest?

Ahh... Looks like I missed the episode again. Seems that I'll have to watch these episodes on Thursdays now rather than Saturdays... I'm always so damn tired lately.

Anyway, as for my definition of bitch fest, which happened some three days ago so that it no longer matters, Mugen and Jin exchange a couple of bitches back and forth as they're trying to decide what number to place a bet on (they're in a gambling house).

Those particular words weren't in the Japanese version so I wasn't expecting them, but they denote the literal translation of the conversation just as good as anything else would have. And it was much more entertaining too. Heh.

The last episode is the one you were talking about with Edo and Osaka castle. That wierdo with the rap friend is a complete moron....I mean ITS A CASTLE!!! Its like getting the capital of New York confused with DC!

Ah but that was funny. Maybe someday Mugen will learn to stop trusting women like that. I mean everytime he does he gets poisoned...or drugged :/

Well, I was suprised at his confusion because Edo castle is virtually 10x bigger than Osaka castle and is located in Edo, the biggest city in Japan at the time... I mean, how could one even BEGIN to confuse Osaka with Edo? For those of you who don't know, Edo is now known as Tokyo. Figured that would kinda give you a perspective on how dumb he was, eh? Lol.
