Why all the PSP bashing?

Ok guys,

You sound like a bunch of Sony bashers -or- Nintendo fanboys when you rag all over the PSP. Heres why...

I admit Sony's "unvailing" of the PSP was lame but the reason it was lame was that there WERE NO GAMES. However, that does not mean it won't be a great gaming system that can compete with the DS later down the road.

If I had to pick a winner (between the PSP and DS) I would choose the DS but mostly becuase the DS appeals to a much larger audience then the PSP. What I mean is, the PSP seems like a more advanced system (which appeals to me) but I don't even own a portable gaming system! Thats not exacly what you would wan't in a niche product. You're target audience will not buy the product, doh.

So, I think the DS will appeal to the younger mobile gaming crownd but I honestly thing the PSP could be (technicly) the best sytem. What realy matters is the games and once again, I think Nintendo has the upper hand.

Still, it will be interesting to see what the PSP is capable of.

I like Gabe's "wait and see" attitude. And actually, there's only a couple of Nintendo fanboys, but it's ok cause they've been waiting a long time for things to start looking up.

I definatly agree here. Though I did get a chance to sample the DS at E3, I didn't get around to seeing the PSP, which is why I've refrained from hardcore bashing, short of comparing specifications. The way I see it, the DS is a pure gaming system, while the PSP falls more into the gadget catagory, so it's rather difficult at this point to crown an overall winner.

This may be true, but I'd like to point out that, while the N64 was a more powerful console compared to the PSX, the PSX clearly came out the winner in that round of console releases.

I say what I feel, even if I get called a fanboy. Thing is, I've played both of them, and think the DS is better...

Also, fanboys are people who like things out of ignorance. I'd like to think that owning all the systems and playing across all of em would combat that.

I would consider myself a Nintendo fan, but beyond that an Xbox fan, a Final Fantasy fan, and a Top Spin Tennis fan. Not because I don't know any better, but because I've experienced a large portion of games and found the stuff that appeals to me.

It's like I've said for a long time, there's nothing wrong with being a fanboy. To each his own. My beef is with hypocrites, people who claim to hate fanboys but are actually the biggest fanboys around. (Jaaaaaaack!) Personally I have never liked Playstation, anyone who knows me knows that I would STILL take a 64 over a PS1 or PS2. (or a GC or an Xbox) As far as PSP vs. DS though, from the perspective of a guy who's never owned a Gameboy, I really don't care about the hardware but I would like to see Nintendo win a round because I really want them to stick around. Not so much for Nintendo's sake, but for the fact that I dread a Sony vs MS war.

fanboy is a bourgeois term. Of course we are going to favor certain games, and/or certain systems. Are we supposed ourselves to be cynical of every game out? that's the problem now, everyone nitpicks at what's wrong with games instead of enjoying them. If someone is like Jack with Halo, i'd rather hear that kinda talk before "all these games suck, they can't match x game, can't get camera right, bla bla."

I actually listen to the show and I know you are not all fans of Nintendo. I just think every piece of cool hardware deserves a serious look.

Q: Break, did you actualy get to play and "games" on the PSP or tech demos or was it just movie clips? I was wondering becuase it does look a little tough to control.

As far as "fanboyism" I just meant that sometimes when you decide you enjoy one thing you can be blind to what others can enjoy about another. I would rather hear valid arguments whey the DS is better than the PSP than just "man that system is a turd". Although it is funny

The PSP is an extremely sexy LOOKING piece of hardware. I briefly played one, and was unimpressed.

The DS simply has it beat in every catagory.

Games
Local and WAN Online (Well no line) gaming
2 screens
Touch sensitive screen
Longer battery life (A lot longer)
Cheaper
Microphone
More and Better Developer Support
Hardcore Support from Square-Enix

I'll prolly end up getting both, simply to give them a fair shake.. but the DS is by far the better system.

I haven't gotten to play either one, but I'm liking the DS better so far. They are actually inovating quite a bit. There are lots of cool looking games coming out, and lots of potential with all the DS's features. I am still really wondering though how some things will work though. Like, if I'm holding the system, how easy will it be to use the D-Pad, touch screen, and buttons at the same time? It just seams a little complicated, especially if you have to hold it with one hand. I'm pretty sure Nintendo has thought of this though, so I'm not too wworried, just curious. The two wireless modes are excellent ideas too.

The PSP looks like it's a decent machine, but it's just nothing that excites me too much. It seams Sony's main focus is the pretty colors. It can play FMV's, PS2 style graphics, etc. That's good and all, but that doesn't catch my eye near as much as Nintendo's offerings and advancements in the portible gaming area. I also don't see the movie thing really taking off because with how cheap DVD players and DVD's are now, who's going to want to buy another special disc for a movie they may already have and can only watch on a tiny screen? It would be handy from time to time, I'm not denying that. I was just on a plane trip, and soemthing like the PSP's size for watching movies would be rather convenient, but I don't think this is going to take off as much as Sony thinks it will. Add to that the battery life. With the spinning disc, high quality display, etc, we might not even be able to watch some movies with one set of batteries.

I'm going to really take a wait and see approach with this too. I'm interested to see how both of these will turn out, but right now there's my thoughts so far.

What excited me about DS is the possibility for complicated RTS's and RPS's on handhelds like there have never been before. Use the top screen for the action, the bottom screen for the menus, stats, maps, ect, and the stylus for control. Think about it, Age of Empires on DS. Wouldn't that be awesome? It opens up an entire genre to a level that just wasn't physically possible before due to the lack of screen space and the limited control options. With the stylus, you've basically got the flexible control of a mouse, clicking, dragging, ect. PSP, sure, it looks good, and as a self-proclaimed graphics whore myself I really like that, but the innovation and the endless possibilities of the DS really are exciting, even for a guy like me who considers portable gamers a lower class.
