DS rules all
This thing looks very cool. I really want to play one and just see how it all works in action. You guys are so lucky. Seeing that footage of Mario 64 and Metroid Prime-like gameplay almost brought a tear to my eye.
I don't remember them saying, but do you guys know how long the batteries are supposed to last? Also how bright is the screen, even better and clearer than the SP? Oh, and will Nintendo use battery packs like the SP, or do we need batteries again? Those are my main questions so far.

PSP will not be able to make a big enough cut into Nintendo because...
1. PSP will be much more expensive. This will make it very unpopular with younger crowds that don't have money and parents that don't want to spend over a munch on a portable gaming system.
2. The DS can be enjoyed by anybody, children and adults alike. It's durable enough for a kid to play, yet has enough features like touch screen and wi-fi to appeal to older audiences. The PSP on the other hand will pretty much be an adult affair and it's being marketed for older audiences.
3. The DS has GBA backwards compatibility of a library of over 500 games.
4. The DS incorporates new styles of gameplay that will truly change the way we play some games. The touch screen seems so simple but the possiblities for new ideas are endless.
This situation is not the same as N64 and PS. Nintendo knew the potential threat that the PSP was, and they were ready for it in a big way. I think the PSP will end up having pretty much the same type of stuff you see on the PS2, which is not too bad because games like Metal Gear Acid are cool, but the DS will be the one breaking new ground, pushing the envelope, pushing games more toward an art form, but most importantly, giving us the most fun.

Hell hath no fury for a woman's scorn for Sega.

The PSP will only do well among the ignorant.Cable wrote:mmmkkaayyy....
wether or not you belive the PSP is worse than the DS or not. You KNOW it's gonna do awesome.
PSP erp: $500
DS erp: $150
DS; online wireless gaming, better graphics, longer battery life, functionality of a PDA... better in every way than the PSP. Not to mention developer support from Square-Enix, SEGA, EA, many others, and of course Nintendo.
I just call it as I see it, and the PSP is a ill conceived turd just like the PSX (the new DVD ripper thing, not the original PlayStation.) I've played both.. and let me till you there is no competition. The only thing that can save Sony is ignorance.
*Edit* Sorry, ignorance and blind Sony fanboyism.. wait, what's the difference? Play the games, not the companies people. They all have great things to offer.. except for the PSP and the N-Gage.
I think we have the PSP to thank for the DS though. It made Nintendo get off their ass and get this baby out there. They knew even though they hold 100% of the handheld market (which is more sales of the GBA than even the PS2) that they needed something awesome.
What really excites me is the connectivity between the DS and the next Nintendo home console. Since it has the capability of doing internet gaming, what is to stop it from being the gateway betwen the next console and online? Nothing, that's what. And from what I've seen, I think it will be a serious competitor to Xbox live, unlike Sony online.
After talking with all the companies, it is obvious to me that Sony couldn't give a fuck about the consumer. They are the rudest booth ever.. save maybe for Square-Enix. Microsoft and Nintendo are both extremely nice and have a good show. Hell, some of Sony's stuff crashed on them. In fact, all the other booths are nice.. Sony is too cocky, just like Nintendo was a few years ago, and I think it will hurt them. That and the fact that they are actually using the fucking cell chip.

So far the DS blows the PSP out of the water. The battey life of the PSP is laughable. Hahahaha. I don't know how well the movie thing will go over since it sounds like you hvae to play it on propriatary discs. Who's going to buy another copy of their favorite movies just to play on the PSP? Not me. The PSP's graphics might be a tad better than the DS's, but that's not for sure, and who even cares. I want gameplay over graphics any time. Why do you think I break out my NES at least once a week still, and I'm still getting more games for it...
I really love the wireless capeabilities. close range, plus next gen connectivity = greatness. Posting addresses on the Breakmanx forums for some Metroid, Mario 64, or Metroid action, even better!
If Nintendo's next console has as much greatness and inovation as the DS is, Nintendo just might be king again.
And I'd just officially like to say that Sony's press conference sucked ass! I wateched it from Gamespot, and it felt like a college lecture from my accounting class. Boring as sin. I determined that Microsoft had more footage of actual Games in its opening set of clips before the show than Sony had total. And most of their videos were just movies, and not games. I want my hour+ back.
I don't mind the PS2, and want one for a few of its games, but I'm not buying one yet till I can find one for really cheap. I have a hard enough time keeping up with my consoles as it is. But if Sony's just going to be this cocky, not show anything, and stress how well they've done in the past as their strength, and some multimedia features, I hope they crash and burn in the next gen, and maybe with the PSP as well. I'm not necessarely wishing them to just die from the video game scene, but to at least really tank and learn from their mistakes, and maybe even put out a quality system at launch?
Sorry for the rant, but here was as good a place as any for it. The DS should rule!
