I think you are right about the MMORPGs not being RPGs, but it all depends on how you play it. Everquest has a large story if you choose to get into it. FFXI has a rather good story. The problem here lies in the players. Most of them don't care about the stories because they are power gamers and not true RPGers. They want to get to the top and look down and do everything from the easy plateau. Because of this, the casual gamers and the ones who play for the story have to suffer because there are few people to group or party with that will go along with the story or do quests to learn the story. I admit that I don't play for the story, mainly because I am too lazy to care. I do, however, enjoy the role playing spirit of armor, items, bonuses, quests, dungeons, tactics, and mostly the playing with friends; both RL friends and ones that I have met in game.

Personally, I play in character, including accent and motions.
Everything I learned came from reading banned books.

Which does add a lot of RPG type elements into the game. But you are in the very very small minority of players. A player doesn't get anything special for being in character or for actually RPing, therefore it is irrelevant to do so for most people.

In SWG, I felt so pressured to keep up with my friends playing, or I would be left behind and the game would suck even more hardcore. That is the problem. It's a constant time battle and a battle with how much time you are willing devote. I don't enjoy devoting my life to leveling to get to the next zone, only to level more once I am in that zone.

I guess I don't feel pressured to keep up because I never feel pressured by anyone. I figure that if I don't let it get to me, it can't make me feel pressured. Oh yeah. But I do know ppl who feel the same.

If anyone remembers or knows The Long Rufus, he still plays galaxies. He informed me that they have begun trying to inspire RP by having "actors" come in and "start shit" and get people involved in the whole good vs evil.

I think that is a good start to making MMORPG's more RPG

Which is why my MMO will not suck, as it avoids at least one, possibly both of those problems.

Tonight I will be recieving FFXI. Just the software. From a friend. I don't know if I really want to purchase a subscription or not. I feel like I am just going to repeat the SWG fiasco over the summer and get bored really quickly. What do you guys think? What should I do?

I have been playing FFXI for over a month now, and I still like it. In fact, I haven't even installed EQ on my new PC because I have been playing FFXI

Okay, it's installed and everything. I plan on starting to play tommorow after the LAN party I will be attending tonight.

I hope everything goes alright!

I guess we will be able to tell in a week
