REDMOND, Wash. — Feb. 19, 2003 — Coming off an impressive holiday season, the Xbox™ video game system continues to show strong North American sales and solidify its position in the highly competitive video game industry. Microsoft Corp. today confirmed that Xbox got off to a very happy new year, with outstanding January sales.
According to NPD Group/NPD Funworld, Xbox maintained a 24 percent next-generation market share in January, double the share of Nintendo’s GameCube system.

Yes, that's true, but you have to remember that MS loses about $100 for every xbox sold...so....that means that they increased their userbase by a helluva lot. Those "rumors" are completely false...Nintendo's closer to canning the 'cube than MS is to canning the system that is killing the cube. If you don't believe me, check out the ICQube article on cube.ign.com.

It seems to me that Microsoft know exactly what they are doing.. They've goen to the best market researchers and economists and said, how can we get into the console market and make as much money as possible.. And they've been told, well, your gonna take a loss to begin with, but if you do this then you'll be set to make shitloads in the future.
Where as Nintendo have just said, well, we need to make a new console.. and are less concerned about making profits.. even if it is to the point that they go out of business.
Also, you have to remember that MS can scrap the Xbox and its hardly made a dent in them.. You gotta remember that they have about $65 billion in cash, plus they could get all type of loans if needed. Nintendo probably has 1/56th as much money as that, and if they scrap the cube, they are fuxored.
