Vehicles in FPS:

Post by Shadowrayth »

I noticed in PC Gamer and on the radio show that it was mentioned about "vehicles" in First Person Shooters being the "big" thing (Mostly talked about - UT 2004). I also noticed that BF'42 (BattleField 1942) was brought up quite a bit, as well as Halo.

I just wanted to throw out there a couple more names of games that brought vehicles into FPS. First we'll start with BattleZone2. While BZ2 was more of a "vehicle" based FPS with the option to leave your vehicle, it certainly should be mentioned.

The most inportant one that comes to mind is Tribes2. Tribes2 seemed to have actually brought the "populararity" of vehicles in FPS, to the gaming community. Maybe it's just me, but I was amazed at being able to have the option of controlling vehicles in an FPS game when it was released.

Flame away...

Vehicles in FPS games are a blast, if you ask me. I played a modded version of Halo where all vehicles flew, even the tank, and it was awesome having Ghost-Scorpion aerial dogfights. My vote is yes.

True, Tribes 2 was big in vehicles, but while Sierra had their hearts in the right place, the whole idea didn't come off very well. For starters, some of the vehicles were borderline-impossible to fly with any grace or skill, and those that could were few and far between. And when you had multi-person vehicles, things got even worse, since people were either extremely bad at vechicle usage, or just didn't try, destroying the whole point of the vehicle.

But, like Star Wars, everything has to have it's start somewhere, and Tribes 2 did make a lot of headway in vehicle FPSs. So thanks for the reminder, and let us know of any others we left out.

i second Richie. i've played Tribes 2 quite extensively, and the vehicles suck, absolutely suck. on the other hand, i think that BF 1942's vehicles are very well done. the airplanes leave a little bit to be desired (from someone who has a deep history in flight sims), but the i think the tanks and jeeps and stuff are great. another FPS-with-vehicles game that just popped into my head: Tron 2.0. haha, haven't played it, probably won't. anyone tried it?

*Edit* I found an old post by Fuzzy Panda praising Tron, so there's 1. Fuzzy, how were the vehicles?

hey never saw this post until now, hmm i never really played the real version just the demo but the game seemed to be split into different modes of play based on the games of the tron movie
for example u can play the fps aspect of the game or the lame disc throwing game which is like riciorchet on HL, then theres a death match esc game where u ride lightcycles that look like vw bugs, it turns into a game of going a single direction leaving a neon wall behind u not how a real vehicle controls , all and all i'd rather play desert combat
