Master and Commander
I saw this movie a week ago, and it's a really good flick. It has some boring parts, but Russell Crowe is the shit, and if he were not present in this movie, I don't think it would have been as good as it was. I really thought it had a good plot, even though I had a different thinking of the movie going into the theatre. But it was still kick ass, and I was glad that saw it in the theatre while I could.
You know it can't be a good movie when the best part of it is Russell Crowe. I totally disagree. I feel that he is a poor actor and I refuse to watch his movies, except for Gladiator. He became famous through politics, not talent. It is for that reason i will not go see this movie. It looked overly dramatized and somewhat cheesy, the bits I saw. For a sea-faring movie, I'd druther watch Pirates of the Caribbean any day.
Everything I learned came from reading banned books.
i think your being to biased. this movie wasn't bad. i'm no crowe fan myself but this was a decent movie. i'm sure it could have been better in parts, but on the whole i found it worth seeing. i mean i never can really get into sea movies, sense the setting is so limited. however, i was never really bored while watching. i want to read the books its based on. now a movie i'm not seeing in theaters is the last samurai, i'm not saying its not going to be good. its just totally not based on reality. i might rent it but for now i'm staying away.
i've been rapping for about seventeen years, okay. i don't write my stuff anymore, i just kick it from my head, you know what i'm saying, i can do that. no disrespect, but thats how i am.
Quite frankly, who cares if I am biased when it comes to what movies I choose to watch or not. I could argue that you are biased for not watching the last samurai in theaters, but I'm not because it's simply your preference. And Master and Commander isn't exactly historically accurate.
Similarly, whichever movies I choose to watch are the ones I choose to watch. I don't like Crowe and find him a poor actor, so I choose not to watch his movie, plus I didn't like the appearance of it anyways. This is not bias, it is opinion. If you don't agree that's quite fine wiht me and I'll stick up for your right to tell your opinion, too. But don't called me biased because my opinion is different from yours. Because that isn't bias - it's preference.

Having different opinions is a good thing, here's mine:
Master and Commander: Liked it. Liked Crowe's performace, and his sidekick, the doctor. (don't remember his name, but he played with Crowe in A Beautiful Mind too) The movie was a little more drama and a little less action than I had anticipated, but what action there was, was awesome. As for comparing to Pirates of the Carribean (another kick-ass movie) there's no comparison, they're too different.
Russell Crowe: I think he's a great actor. I don't really care how he got where he is or what kind of person he is, he's a good actor and I like his movies. Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind are both some of the best movies ever made. (all in my opinion) Bias? No. I'm no Crowe fanboy, but I am a fan, and there is a difference.
The Last Samauri: Haven't seen it yet, really want to though, looks awesome.

There are a few things I will address in my post, skip to the number you are interested in
1) Master and Commander (the movie)
2) Russel Crowe (including personal opinion of the man)
3) The arguement between Kit and Sil (everyone's name should be 3 letters)
4) The effects on Albino tree monkeys on the economies of Columbia and Brazil (okay, maybe not)
1) Master and Commander was a good flick, as Kit said, see movies seem to be limited because of their setting. But that's okay, because the movie doesn't revolve around setting, it revolves around character, and development. As the movie progresses, so does the characters, and in this situation, it would benefit the viewer if he related to one of the characters, and through self-exploration, grow and learn as a human as well as the character grows and evolves in the movie (the ultimate goal of a character driven movie). For movies aren't just for entertainment, (well some are) but they need to invoke emotion and connection with the characters. I felt that Master and Commander did that quite well. I did feel some of the acting was shallow. I enjoyed the film, though it was a little lengthy. I don't think it deserves best picture, but I believe it will get a nod for a group of oscars.
2) Russel Crowe is a decent actor, but not great, no where near great (see: SP Episode, Fighting Round the World with Russel Crowe) He did surprise me with his preformance in this movie though. He did a very good job playing the captain, though I believe he showed a little to much emotion at times (that possibly could be the directors fault). When I was mostly referring to some of the other officers, not Mr. Crowe. Though his past preformances aren't the best, he shows promise, much like Leonardo DiCaprio has turned from some mediocre preformances to being a great actor (see: Gangs of New York)
3) Sil, (and not singling you out, but its the part I want to respond to) I do agree that the fact that you don't like Russel Crowe does not make you biased, but I feel it is short-sighted to pass up movies on the baisis of one actor in the film. Not saying you should rush out to the theater and pay 7 bucks to see it, but if you get a chance, I would take a glance at it on HBO or if a friend rents or purchases it.

Puppets, holding the scissors of freedom, are still powerless to cut the strings of opression. That is to say, once a puppet, always a puppet.

It isn't just the actor, the whole movie looked somewhat cheesed. I'll do what I always do with movies I don't see in theaters - vcd's, my friend.
And every actor has a few movies where they act well. Like Keanu Reeves has had some with excellent acting - Devil's Advocate, for example. It doesn't mean the movie excites me or anything.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have some X-men reruns to watch...
