Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler)
or
Terry Gilliam (Monty Python, Brazil, Twelve Monkeys)

both of them were slated to direct a Watchmen film at one time or another.

Zach Snyder is ok. I don't agree with the advertising that says he's "visionary," but I've enjoyed his Dawn of the Dead remake and 300. For me though, ok isn't enough for me because Watchmen is pretty much the greatest thing ever written.

I don't really care about anything else though. I'll be seeing the new Wolverine movie. I'd probably see the new Street Fighter and Dragonball movies too.

Go watch the Watchmen movie if you want. I don't really care. I'm sure it will be enjoyable. All I ask is that you read the book sometime.

I have no real desire to see Watchmen. Best case scenario it's going to fall far short of the comic. Worst case, it will suck so bad that it creates a psychic shockwave that kills thousands of people (and sensitives worldwide will have bad dreams for years to come).

I don't wish for Watchmen to suck. That would be a pretty big blow against the comics industry. Watchmen is unanimously regarded as the greatest superhero comic of all time. If this is the best that comics have to offer and the movie sucks, it will have been a great missed opportunity to expand the comic buying audience.

My only hope for the film is that it creates enough positive buzz that people interest themselves in checking out the book, and hopefully other comics and graphic novels as well. There's definitely been an increase of interest in Watchmen at stores and online retailers, but will it translate to new regular comic readers? Hopefully.

With the amount of advertising they're pumping into the film and the buzz surrounding it on the internet, I can almost guarantee that the film will have a huge opening weekend. Will it be as hot as Dark Knight? I doubt it. What Warner Bros. wants is to replicate the success of 300.

The real worst case scenario is that the film sucks so bad that people who see the film have no desire to read the book that they're based on. That was the case with the other Alan Moore (writer of the original Watchmen comic) related films Constantine, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and From Hell. V for Vendetta did ok and garnered interest when the film was released, but that interest did not translate to new comic readers.

I'm actually reading the comic since I want to see what all the hype is about. I generally expect book to movie adaptations to suck, so it wouldn't affect my opinion of the comic at all anyway.

I'm going to see it today, so I will let you know. From what I've seen, it looks visually stunning. Although, I absolutely love the comic book, I am going to see the film tonight and I don't expect it to be the same; just like movie to video game adaptations are never the same. Different mediums.

That said, the buzz I've heard from people involved is that they took enormous care to make a movie that fans of the book would enjoy. Now, lets see if that intension translates into what is on screen... which is really what film is about.

Constantine, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and From Hell. V for Vendetta

I enjoyed all of these films, although I must confess that I haven't read anything about them since watching (yet) but this has little to do with a lack of inspiration to do so from watching the films and far more to do with my love of Korean romance (currently reading the last book of Snow Drop, which the Q bought for me to read and then donate to the library since they didn't have it).

Unfortunately it has long been my experience that it is better to watch something FIRST and then read whatever it is based upon, otherwise you sit through the film going WTF???!!! Which is exactly what happened to me when I saw The Golden Compass after having read the His Dark Materials trilogy.

It is also important to remember that books or anything to film is always an adaptation:

1. the act of adapting.
2. the state of being adapted; adjustment.
3. something produced by adapting:

By the very definition it will be adjusted, and therefore, different. It is the same general story taken over by someone else's vision.

I'm much more interested in Darren Aronofsky or Terry Gilliam's "vision" of Watchmen though.

Think of it this way...

What if Penny Arcade was made into a feature length live action film?

But what if Tycho had nothing to do with the making of the film? In fact, Tycho publicly stated that he does not support the making of the film whatsoever.

As a fan of films, yes, you can view the film and enjoy it.

As a fan of Penny Arcade though, you would find yourself in a dilemma.

Oh, also Ewe Boll is directing.

Wouldn't you at the very least wish somebody you liked was directing?
Would you even go see it if Tycho did not support it?

These are the sort of questions I find myself dealing with. My choice is to not watch the film.

Again, I don't mind if people watch the film or not. I'm actually fascinated with peoples reaction to the film. They seem somewhat divided. From people I know, to reviews I've read, it seems people either love it, or hate it.

Whether you see it or not, whether you like the movie or not, I still encourage everybody to check out the book.

I heard the voice acting in the motion comic sucks. I haven't seen it myself, but I'd rather just read the comic.

It's basically one guy doing the voices. He does OK for most of them. It only disturbs me when he voices females... It never sounds feminine at all.

It's nice seeing it in motion though. The music also adds to the experience. I think you'd prefer it over the movie, if it's as horrible as most of the die hard fans think.

Visually stunning, but I enjoyed the graphic novel more.

They did get my favorite part right, though:
