The Office (UK)
Does anyone here know if it's worthwhile. I love the US remake, but some critics say this one is better.

Most people I talk to say that the U.K. version is better. I disagree though. I love Rainn Wilson!
It is definitely worthwhile to watch, though.

Werd, And Steve Carell does a great job also, which amazes me because his last few movies sucked hard, and 40 year old virgin wasn't ALL that great.
Re: The Office (UK)
Depends if you think you'll understand the British nuances... I prefer the original but they both have merit.

Chances are the british humor will fly past me. :/
Re: The Office (UK)
WTF is "marmite"? And "jaffa cakes"? And what is this "taking the piss" they speak of?
British television makes no sense at all!

Re: The Office (UK)
Their funny though. It's a good show, not as good as the remake, but I mean come on, how are you gonna beat that post Super Bowl episode? REALLY.
Oh, side note, the British version is definitely worth a watch. Ricky Gervais is pretty fucking funny.

I'd just like to point out that none of this stuff is difficult to look up.

"Taking the piss - One of the things Americans find hardest about the Brits is our sense of humour. It is obviously different and is mainly based on irony, sarcasm and an in-built desire to "take the piss". This has nothing to do with urine, but simply means making fun of someone."

I'm more amazed by the fact that nobody seems to get tired of the endless remakes in film and television.

I was being facetious. Which you would've known had you remembered an earlier thread in which I explained to jayt11 what you meant by "Taking the piss". I'm actually quite well-informed when it comes to UK culture.
It comes mostly from having watched every episode of QI multiple times.

Good memory... That was so long ago...Verence wrote:I was being facetious. Which you would've known had you remembered an earlier thread in which I explained to jayt11 what you meant by "Taking the piss".

My Mum loves that show.Verence wrote:It comes mostly from having watched every episode of QI multiple times.
My memory sucks, but my comments were more widely meant than being aimed at you personally anyway. Mostly because I am so sick and tired of struggling with conversations here - case in point I phone a store that stocks British goods and have this conversation:
"Hi, do you have any Savlon antiseptic cream in stock at the moment? That's Savlon, S A V L ON."
"Uh, I'll just go check"
"No, we only have Savlon"
"..." "That's what I just asked for."
"S A V L O N?"
"Yes, that's what I just said."
"Oh, it didn't sound right."
I mean WTF!!!! I think I know how to speak English! Thank goodness I don't have an awkward northern accent or I might as well just give up now.
But I have seen quite a few episodes of the American version of The Office and it seems to be of a good standard, I just find it interesting that so many things get remade for an American audience whereas a British audience is usually just as happy to watch American shows.

Re: The Office (UK)
I think this thread somehow turned into a UK vs US thing. I apologize if I made it seem as if I think British entertainment is worthless. I was just wondering what you guys thought.
Some of my favorite movies are British after all.

Re: The Office (UK)
Oh, I know, it baffles me. The office is one of the few (if not the only) "Americanized Remake" show I'll watch. I hear good things about the US version of Life on Mars, but I love the original so much I just know I'd end up hating the remake.Discordia wrote:I just find it interesting that so many things get remade for an American audience whereas a British audience is usually just as happy to watch American shows.
Re: The Office (UK)
when in doubt, always go with the foreign versions......The Ring, Transformers, Whose Line Is It Anyway, Gatchaman, Voltron....and now, The Office....
Personally i can't fucking stand Steve Carell, he plays the same role in every gig he gets.
And I REALLY hope they don't decide to AMERICANIZE Absolutely Fabulous.

He does play the same role a lot. I find The Office the most enjoyable though.
