FFXI is out
FFXI is out
Is anyone getting FFXI for the PC? I'd get it for the PS2, but then I'd have to wait 6 months, buy a network adapter, pay $99 for the game since it comes with the hard drive, settle for lesser graphics... Come to think of it, I can't see one damn good reason to get the PS2 version. In either case, it's out now on PC, anyone getting it? I will be as soon as I garner the money for it... (After I get Top Spin, that is.)

beware...
I'm no hardcore MMO player by any means... I dabbled in UO... DAoC... and most recently SWG. I found the concept of MMO games to be incredibly facinating yet poorly executed on so many levels that I'd all but given up on the genre completely. Being a huge Square fan (care to see my factory-sealed Crono Trigger? I charge admission) I couldn't pass up buying Final Fantasy XI when it landed on PC but having a bad taste in my mouth I hesitated to install it and run it with all the excitement and enthusiasm of Square's traditional console-oriented, offline RPGs...
Needless to say, I put forth the effort and created my PlayOnline account making damn sure that I didn't set any expectations for what I was about to experience. I did this on fucking Friday of last week... it's only the 4th day now and I've already logged fucking 21 hours into it and I can't... fucking... stop...

Ok, boy do I feel guilty. I've already stopped playing it. It just doesn't hold my interest. The way it works, it encourages you to work alone until you're powerful enough to join a group, and all that repetitive rabbit-smacking all by your lonesome is reeeeeeeally boring. I've tried both the monk and black mage classes, and neither of them really can hold my interest. I would have loved to make a BM/thief so I could find the ult armor BM set with stabbity skills, but it's WAAAAAY too much work. Hell, you can't even get your support class until you complete a certain quest. The little side quests are nice, but because of the way the system works, they take forever to fulfill. For someone who only has a couple hours at a time to play, this really doesn't work. At least with Galaxies I can go grab and complete a couple of missions with friends and earn some cash in that time, as opposed to completing a third of a mission. Basically, FFXI feels like Final Fantasy, but slower. Much slower. Too slow to hold my interest. I'm prolly gonna trade it in for Magic: Battlegrounds. Galaxies just is done better, I think. It shows you your path in your classes, whereas in FFXI you have no clue what's next. I like Galaxies' system because it gives you a goal to work towards; in FFXI, it goes "Well, I'm halfway to leveling up... Soooo what do I get when I level up?" Log off, go to GameFAQs, look it up... "Nothing until 3 levels from now?? That'll take me 3 days at this rate. Screw this."
Yeah, I'm back on Galaxies and enjoying it much more. Long live Star Wars.

What's really funny is that I quit Galaxies for the very same reasons you quit FFXI - Galaxies bored the hell outta me with all those stupid mission terminals that don't even provide missions, they just give another reason to smack kreetles around. Really, it's just a matter of personal preference and after spending 80+ hours in Galaxies versus my now 35+ hours in FFXI - I'm glad I turned Galaxies off and I don't see any reason to go back to it.
FFXI, IMO, excels in its interesting quests (yes, they even make FedEx missions sound interesting) and better overall character development. As for partying, I don't see how it inhibits you from partying at earlier levels... I've been partying since day one with random people and I've had an absolute blast.

q you are too easily swayed by the cool. i bet if he said rectal probes where cool you would try them. no way is magic going to rule. i already played the demo and was disgusted. its not even magic. also good luck trading in ffxi if you do make up your own mind, you can't trade it in to eb.
i've been rapping for about seventeen years, okay. i don't write my stuff anymore, i just kick it from my head, you know what i'm saying, i can do that. no disrespect, but thats how i am.
