Monster Hunter Portable 2G fastest selling game ever in JPN

After moving nearly 700k units on it's launch day, Monster Hunter Portable 2G (an expansion to the original MHP2) has gone on to sell one million units in only 6 days in Japan. That makes it the fastest selling game ever released in Japan. Think about this for a second; faster than Brawl, faster even than any Dragon Quest game, faster than any other game ever released in the country. All indications are that the game is selling out as fast as they arrive in Japanese stores, and productivity decreases have even been noted as a result of it.

Why is this so noteworthy (besides the obvious)? First of all, this is a game series that has been lauded by critics on this side of the pacific since it's first inception. It's also only an expansion pack, feature only "more of everything" that the original had; the game doesn't even have online. More still, it's a PSP game, a system that has certainly had it's problems in the past in getting the same kinds of software sales of other systems. In the weeks leading up to the launch of this game, PSP system sales in Japan have been very high (higher than both the Wii and DS for several weeks). Could this be an indication of things to come? Certainly the system won't overtake DS' massive lifetime sales in the country, but it looks as though the saviour for the PSP at least in the mindset of Japanese games might not be Crisis Core after all, but Monster Hunter of all things!

I saw a vid of Monster Hunter Freedom on Gametrailers and it looked like the worst godamn game I've ever seen.

I guess they really upgraded the system.

I played the first Monster Hunter on PS2 and wasn't terribly impressed... But probably because I didn't think it was as good as Phantasy Star Online.

Monster Hunter is really hard to get into, but it's kinda like Pokemon in that it becomes really addicting after a while.
