Yeah, there were a ton of great games on the SNES, its just unfortunate most of them never sold well.

Earthbound = awesome = huge money pit for NOA.

But that doesn't mean that we can't still appreciate them now. Its still a major stepping stone for console gaming, if not only for its many new titles, but also as the first time our stand-by companies were forced to 'evolve' their major properties.

Super Castlevania IV is my favorite Castlevania next to Symphony of the Night. The music is amazing, the graphics were staggering for their time, and the rotating whip gameplay mechanic was genius.

I totally agree with Q that Legend of the Mystical Ninja is a must play that you never see coming.
A cartoony Goemon running around in a slapstick Japan, full of anachronisms, fighting with yo-yos and... shit its a strange game, but it is fun as all get out, and has a great co-op mode. Probably my next VC download.

you can legally download any game with the only prerequisite being that you own a copy of that game.

Oh, and regarding the Goemon games, I liked Legend of the mystical ninja, but there was another goemon game that was all side scrolling that I liked better. If anyone knows what it's called, tell me. I wish to play it again. It also played a lot like the MMORPG side scroller Maplestory.

And Kirby Super Star had the best damn power ever, Ninja. I would go out of my way to get that power. Its arial down kick is amazing, especially for mini bosses. You could just kick them nonstop. Seriously, every other power fails compared to Ninja. Made me mad when my friend would die when I had Ninja because I didn't want to give it up.

Unless the ROM is downloaded via an officially licensed source such as XBLA, PSN, or the Wii store, it is illegal in the United States to have a ROM image of any game you do or do not own. This was decided in the 1983 court case Atari vs. JS&A. It is only ok to backup software that is stored on a magnetic medium such as a floppy disk. CD-ROMS, DVD-ROMS, and cartridges do not run the risk of being erased suddenly as magnetic mediums do. Also, most games have fine print in their manuals that reiterate this fact and state that it is illegal to make backup or archival copies of the game.

There were a bunch of rumors on the internets that you could download the game for 24 hours as long as you deleted it after that, or that you could download the game if you already own or owned it. Both of these are false in the United States. Owning a game doesn't give you unlimited rights to the software contained, it gives you a limited license to use the device (cartridge, CD or whatever) in the capacity it was meant to be used. Many other countries do allow for legal backups of software and so ROMs are legal in many other countries.

I think it is pretty silly that you can't make backups of your own games here. I think the internet has proven that people have little regard for laws they can break, so the trick would be to make people WANT to buy these games. Adding online play to an old game is one great way (and yes I know some emulators do this.) If the virtual console had this feature I would have a lot more games on it.

oh, I guess you can't do it at all in the US anymore. But also, didn't nintendo say they were going to try harder to crack down on piracy groups and sites? You may find it challenging to find backups of games with the words zelda, metroid, kirby, or mario in the title.
