Gaming's biggest diversion of the last year has finally come to an end. Today, after the stock markets in Tokyo and Osaka closed, Toshiba announced that HD DVD was no more. The company will cease developing, manufacturing and marketing HD DVD players and recorders. Yes, the format war is finally over, and Sony's Blu-ray has emerged victorious. From the press release:
Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.
This decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.

HD-DVD Officially Dead
So, Toshiba invented the HD-DVD and is now "unventing" it. Glad the better format won. Hopefully prices will come down now.

That's what everyone said when DVD was new.. and when every other format was new. There are early adopters/suckers like Gabe and I, and then there are the people that get stuff when its better adopted and more reasonable.Typheus wrote:My roommate here says there's no reason for HD-DVD or BluRay. What do you think? xD

If you have an HDTV or intend on owning one in the future, then yeah Blu-Ray is pretty fucking important.
Re: HD-DVD Officially Dead
I preferred the cheapness of HD-DVD. Best part is now that HD-DVD is gone Sony no longer has a reason to try lowering its prices. Congratulations. (I don't have anything other than regular dvds btw)

Yeah, but DVD and CD never had any competition either and they are fairly reasonably priced. (Not always for CDs unfortunately.)

I definitely think blu-ray will overtake DVD at some point, especially when HD TV's lower in price.

If it doesn't than it won't be because of the format but because of a fucked up opportunity.Wiizerfanboy wrote:I definitely think blu-ray will overtake DVD at some point, especially when HD TV's lower in price.
