Sweeney Todd

Game sighting in a movie? Saw something on the screen other than a game? Weird, let us know.

Ah, tragic. Then she IS nothing more than a McGuffin, but given a tremendous amount of screen time regardless.

That's too bad, it reflects some weakness in the writing of the original work, if Q's opinion reflects majority.

I liked everything about the movie. It's beautiful in its insanity.

My favorite parts are Lucy's.

The original is actually extremely popular o.O

It's actually very common for those who saw the original musical to say it's their favorite musical ever...As I've noticed variously online...You're being rather overly critical on the matter of Johanna really since she's rather useless...

She does serve an important point since, she offers motivation for Anthony which provides cruel irony and conflict for Sweeney at one point. Aside from that she's useless, however.

But that's kind of a big point, isn't it?

Don't get me wrong, like I said in the OP, I liked the movie, but I thought some of the cuts and posturing that Burton used make his direction feel weak.

The problem with Johanna is that she is just a plot device, and if that's the case, she doesn't need to have so much time devoted to her. In fact, she could have very well been dead and Todd's revenge plots could have been merited, and another excuse to shuffle the characters around could have been found.
If Johanna is still going to be alive, and have that much time devoted to her, then I believe her story should have its own resolution. That's all.

Well she was a plot device cause that's all she was necessary for. She didn't really have all that much time devoted to her. The time "devoted" to her was actually there to describe the stories of Anthony and Sweeney, especially the latter. If she were just flat out dead then Sweeney would've been more 2 dimensional since the story would be more mainstream, especially since a majority of writers just choose to kill characters to motivate revenge rather than leave them alive and in need of rescue.

Also, with Johanna about to marry the judge it made it easier to provide more conflict between the Judge, and it made it a lot easier to put the Judge into Sweeney's office, since the Judge went to the barber shop both times becasue of Johanna.

I got the soundtrack, but to my disappointment, it's missing some of the delightful percussion that was added to the songs in the movie by rolling pins, murder chair machinery, etc.

Yeah...they deleted most of everything that wasn't actually part of the music, so all background noise and the large majority of "speaking" rather than singing was removed...my friend downloaded it off iTunes. The tracks are more complete, and there's 3 more. Very annoying knowing they did that...Oh, and all the spoken parts that were removed (including some parts that were fairly important to the song, like when Anthony said "Mr. Todd?" or "And the lady, did she surcumb?" in the first song of the movie...) were also included in the soundtrack on iTunes. I was very pissed, especially seeing that I was given the soundtrack by a friend on my birthday...

I don't see the point to why they did it, but they did...Get it off iTunes if you want a much more complete soundtrack. I don't recall if the background noises that Verence spoke of are on there though, but the soundtrack is more complete so it's a fucking lot better than what I have...

Yeah...they even have the only song that Beadel sang on the iTunes soundtrack...a poor loss to the original soundtrack it seems...
