Games We're Looking Forward To
Games We're Looking Forward To
Here's where we can post our own personal list of the Games of 2003 that we're looking forward to, like on this week's show.
My personal list:
Jak II - I just picked up Jak and Daxter, and have fallen in love with it quickly. The sequel is due out in September, and it'll have a darker, more adult feel. It'll utilize weapons in a unique way, such as being able to use them in combos with unarmed combat. Add on top of that a city easily rivaling one the size of GTA and this game should be one to get.
Tony Hawk Underground - I've spent many hours on THPS2, but never felt obligated to get another TH game until now. This one completely redoes the whole game. You don't control a pro skater; you ARE the pro skater. You can literally (on the PS2) send a picture of your face in to Neversoft, they convert it into a file format the game can understand, and bingo, your face is right there on your skater. This game has create-a-everything. Create-a-skater, create-a-park, create-a-trick, create-a-board, create-a-goal... Despite my Gamecube biases, I'll be getting the PS2 version of this one for its online capabilities (which even Xbox doesn't get!).
Spider-Man 2 - Instead of just building another game off of the old engine like so many sequels do, Neversoft is building this one from the ground up. Everything is swingable, and on top of that, used web strands STAY in the game environment after you've used them (kind of like ex-girlfriends...) Plus, the game environment consists of a life-like, populated Manhattan, complete with (they're planning, they have to get the rights yet) famous landmarks.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 'Nuff said. You don't like the green? What's yer problem, man?
Soul Calibur 2 - Again, 'nuff said. I can't wait to use Link to kick some serious ass. (Get it? Cuz it wasn't serious in Wind Waker... it was a cartoon, get it? Yeah...)
PN03 - Rhythm-based combat? Hell yeah! Hook me up! Besides, what's better than controlling a hot chick in spandex and shooting lots of things. Think Devil May Cry meets Space Channel 5.
Masters of the Universe - I don't know if it's gonna be any good or not, but I'm a sucker for the 80s (I write this as I'm listening to a megamix of 80s dance music... Oooo, heaven is a place on earth...). Also take into consideration that the only He-Man video game was back in the Atari/Intellivision days, and it wasn't that great. This game can only be better than that.
WWE Wrestlemania XIX - Did ya do a double take? A wrestling game?? THQ always makes great wrestling games, and this time around they're adding a few things, like a realistic story mode, Fire Pro-style gameplay, and blood! I'm definitely going to have to start watching Smackdown again to catch up to the storyline with this one.
Spy vs. Spy - The spies from Mad Magazine are getting their own multiplayer shooter on the PS2. I know, it doesn't sound like it'll probably turn out well, despite the awesome license, but I have my hopes up.
Phantasy Star Online Episode III - An online CCG where you don't pay per pack? Where do I sign up?! It's actually due out in 2004, but the beta should be available this year, so it goes on the list.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - It's been pushed back as many times as Star Wars Galaxies, and it's not Final Fantasy as we know it, but if Gabe from PA says it rules, I'll buy into it.
American Idol - HA! Fooled you! Actually this goes on the list of "Games I'm Hoping Will Dive Bomb Big Time in 2003".
Wario World - What can I say, I've been waiting for the big guy to be playable on the big screen since I played the original Wario Land on my Super Game Boy. Add the fact that Treasure is developing it, and you've got a sure-fire winner.
Half-Life 2 - The hype about this one has almost entirely been "graphics graphics graphics!" Well, I'm not excited about this one for the graphics. I'm excited for the sound! For one, the original Half-Life had a sweet soundtrack. For another, they've developed a new technology for this game that automatically makes the characters lips move according to the sound being played. The mouth movements aren't pre-programmed; they're run on the fly according to the sound file. So theoretically it's possible to change the sound files to, oh say, "Watch these cheese squirrels fly out of my butt!" and they'll say it, complete with accurate mouth movement. Isn't technology grand?
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence - I cringed when they announced the new PS2 Castlevania would be 3D. After all, how could we forget the travesty that was 3D Castlevania on the N64? This one's on my list simply because I hope it doesn't suck. At least Michiru Yamane's doing the soundtrack.
Starfox 2 - Hmmm. It kind of looks like Halo with Arwings. I watched the trailer, and actually wasn't too impressed. But if Nintendo can pull off a great multiplayer shooter that can give Halo a run for its money, I'm all for it.
Starfox Armada - And let us not deny the arcade. Namco's Starfox arcade game will rule, there's no denying.
Beatmania IIDX 9th Style - Speaking of arcade games, the latest Beatmania game is due out in a few months. What's Beatmania, you ask? Well it's made by the Dance Dance Revolution people, but with 7 buttons, a turntable, and no feet involved. Kansas City is getting an 8th Style machine very soon, so theoretically it'll be upgradable to 9th Style... Here's to hoping.
DDRMAX2 - Konami is putting out their second american PS2 DDR release in Q3, and while I'm not a big fan of home releases, I have to support my DDR.
There's my list. "But RT," you might ask, "where's Halo 2?" Well for one, that's coming out in 2004, not 2003, right, Break? And if you're asking that, you don't know me well enough to know my anti-Xbox bias. So it's got great graphics, whoop de doo. So does HL2. If the gameplay is good, I'll play it at Break's house, but I'm not losing sleep over waiting for it.

Here's some games that I'm definitely looking forward to:
Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Jedi Academy - While the actual title will probably be condensed to just "Jedi Academy", this game definitely has me pumped. I hope the trend to use vehicles in more games continues, I'm expecting some hardcore landspeeder action, not to mention strafing enemy bases with a TIE fighter
Star Trek: Shattered Universe - I'm definitely looking forward to this one since I bought my first PC just as a means to play Star Trek: Hidden Evil (and my PlayStation just to play Star Trek: Invasion, even though I've diversified my gaming interests since then)
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge - As a fan of the original Crimson Skies, Road to Revenge seems like it will definitely improve upon the first game
Call of Cthulu - this looks like everything the Alone in the Dark series was meant to be, but didn't pull off
Karaoke Revolution - Konami + Karaoke = a formula for success
(wow, having a Karaoke simulator right next to an H.P. Lovecraft inspired game)
Battlestar Galactica - This game looks like it could be a really solid & entertaining space combat sim
True Crime: Streets of LA - I'm really liking the fact that games in this type of action genre are moving towards a more realistic look & feel
Other games that I'm excited for that may or may not be released ever:
Shenmue III - I think I'm one of the 3 people that are really looking forward to it if it ever gets made (the others being the 2 webmasters of the only Shenmue fan sites I know of)
Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Jedi Academy - While the actual title will probably be condensed to just "Jedi Academy", this game definitely has me pumped. I hope the trend to use vehicles in more games continues, I'm expecting some hardcore landspeeder action, not to mention strafing enemy bases with a TIE fighter

Wow Q...you sure do have a lot of gamecube games that you're looking forward to...especially since you don't even own a Cube.
I guess that's really why you're getting the PS2 version of THUG, isn't it? I guess you also won't be playing as Link in SC2, huh? Thought so. Anyways...
Here are some of my top picks for 2003:
Fable: Big Blue Box has been working on this for some time, and it looks to be the definitive RPG for Xbox when it comes out...the ability to chose to be good or evil is just awesome, and if it's as amusing as their website that they just put up for it: [link=http://www.fablegame.com/]Fable Website[/link], then it will be tons of fun.
Grabbed by the Ghoulies: This wacky and weird game that Rare showed off for Xbox at E3 seems to be one that everyone's talking about. While initial impressions were just meh, after playing the game for a bit, everyone was raving about it. I've heard it's kind of a Smash TV-type game with mummies that air-hump. I'm sold
Castlevania: It's Castlevania. What else can I say? Hopefully this won't be too similar to Devil May Cry or too much like Castlevania 64.
Soul Calibur 2: Rave about link all you want, but 720p support and Spawn are where it's at. I recently got the ps2 version, and I must say that the soul definitely still burns. I've put in over 15 hours on the game already, and I've only had it for about 3 days. It's got me hooked just like the first one did. Look to lose sleep all over again when this one comes out. The ps2 version is quite nice as well, and Heihachi is a solid character. Oh yeah, and some sort of Xbox Live support for the xbox version
Sudeki: This game looks sweet. Another RPG coming out for xbox in the coming year, this game looks awesome. Real-time combat and an awesome multiplayer mode (co-op anyone?) look to make this game one of the coolest of the year.
Sega Sports 2K4: Anything sega sports this year will hopefully continue to prove their dominance over EA, but I know that the unknowing people will continue to buy madden until the cows come home...one can only hope...
KOTOR: This game is finally coming out in July, and it should be awesome. Hopefully the first good star wars game on a console. And it's also an RPG
SSX3: This should be awesome...as long as EA Big doesn't screw anything up, this should be just as good, if not better than the other two.
Top Spin Tennis: Call me a huge virtua tennis fan, but I can't wait for this game. if it even plays half as well as Virtua Tennis did, it'll be awesome. And the XSN sports compatibility should just be awesome.
Xbox Music Mixer: Yeah, it sounds kinda stupid, but it will FINALLY allow me to put all of my favorite MP3s from my PC onto my xbox for use in games that allow custom soundtracks. Oh yeah...and the karaoke.
Karaoke Revolution: Zukin's got it right, this should be pretty cool. I also just found out that the makers of my beloved FreQuency and Amplitude are helping with the development of this game...so it's looking pretty good.
DDR Ultimate Mix: Yeah...DDR on Xbox with some sort of Xbox Live support...oh yeah...
Viewtiful Joe: I played the demo, and this game looks to be pretty cool. Capcom's gonna sell a bunch of these, because it's just plain fun.
Project Gotham Racing 2: I'm a huge fan of the first, and from what I saw at e3 and all other impressions that I have, I think this'll be awesome.
Ninja Gaiden: Ninja Gaiden. 'Nuff said.
There are a whole bunch more that I'm also looking forward to, including Halo 2 and especially Half Life 2 (i'm building a new pc just for it) but if you want to know the others, you're going to have to specifically ask me.

Oh for the love of... I'm waiting until the 23rd to get my Cube, when they bundle it with the GBA player. And I WILL be buying SC2 for the Cube, and I AM getting THUG for PS2 because of the online stuff. Frickin' A...Jack Burton wrote:Wow Q...you sure do have a lot of gamecube games that you're looking forward to...especially since you don't even own a Cube.

Well, my wedding, credit card bills, and saving for a baby on the way will definitely limit what I buy this year.
Here's what I do want tho:
Soul Calibur 2 on Xbox: Sure the GC import is great, but now I get to see what the story is behind all the weapons and I can understand the character endings. Plus quicker load times, 5.1, and slicker visuals are a plus.
Topspin Tennis: I thought Sega would have put out an online Tennis by now. As it is, I'll go with Topspin on Live, so look for my Jack Burton, and we'll get some matches in.
Virtua Fighter 4: Evo - Can't say I got into the regular version, but there's a reason why people put it in the same class as SC2 and I aim to find out why.
Madden/ESPN football: Normally I always go with Sega, but the playcalling adjustments on the fly sound awesome. Xbox live is where it's at for online tho, which makes me lean more towards ESPN.
Otogi- After the demo, this game looks and plays awesome, as long as they fix that camera.
Vice City: Xbox - here's to hoping that rumor will become a reality. GTA isn't for everyone, but it's for me, and I'd like to see it with better resolution, better framerate, and no load times between cities, that'll work for me.
SNK vs. Capcom when it hits consoles since it has more Samurai Showdown characters.
Can't think of anymore, and don't know if I'll be able to afford all of those anyway.

No problem Jack! I like this forum because I know I actually have a chance to put faces to the names one day, and we'll get some quality games in.
I'll tell you, we were having a tournament and my friends were advertising on this other board. I registered on that board as somebody else, promising great competition and a little smack talking. They never knew it was me of course. But for my alias handle, I used the one and only Jack_Burton. That's why I sort of laughed when you told me what your handle was on the site.
