Music you can't live without...

I guess you could listen to other music too. Music beyond games here.

Music you can't live without...

Post by LikkleBaer »

Okay, you've probably done this before, but I figure the answer changes over time anyway, so here it is.

Say you were going to be imprisoned / stuck on a desert island / stuck on a space station for the next 10 years. You can take one CD with you, holding say... 14 songs... and that's the only music you'll have for the 10 year period. What songs would you take with you, and perhaps more interestingly, why those particular songs?

I'm truly interested in this one, since what you choose and why will say a lot about you both as a music lover and as a person. Be honest with your choices. I'm going to have to think about this awhile before posting my own list. Please play along ^_^

this is big, not something I'll be able to come up with on the spot. I'll post in a bit with my list.

I'll post the songs that I already listen to over and over again. These three bands probably make up 80% of what I listen to. (this is a mixed cd, right?)

Tool:
1 Vicarious
2 Jambi
3 10,000 Days
4 Jerk-Off
5 Forty Six and 2
6 Triad

Deftones:
7 Battle-axe
8 My Own Summer
9 Fireal
10 Root

Chevelle:
11 The Clincher
12 Send the Pain Below
13 Point #1
14 Dos
I have spoken.

Mmm hmm ^_^ Thanks for responding (I'm still thinking about my own answer like Triad). What do these particular songs mean to you?

Lotsa' music topics lately. :)

1. Morrissey - I know its gonna happen someday (Live)
2. Morrissey - Lost
3. Belle and Sebastian - The Lonliness of the Middle Distance Runner
4. Belle and Sebastian - Ease You Feet in the Sea
5. Stellastarr* - Island Lost at Sea (with hidden track Bloated Wife)
6. Stellastarr* - Stay Entertained
7. The Smiths - Stretch Out and Wait
8. The Smiths - These Things Take Time
9. Yasushi Ishii - Survival On The Street Of Insincerity
10. Yasushi Ishii - Dracula's Holy Pupil And R&R
11. Radiohead - Paranoid Android
12. Radiohead - Subterranean Homesick Alien
13. Nick Drake - Pink Moon
14. Nick Drake - Place To Be

Going with the premise that I was trapped on an island, most of the tracks I picked to calm me and help deal with panic or lonliness (was I meant to take the assignment that literally?).

Tracks 9 and 10 however, are included because they really get my adrenaline going. They'd be listened to before hunting or if I were feeling too lethargic.

Again, I'm not sure how literally I was supposed to take things, but I ended up with a CD that may not be made of my absolute favorite songs, but would help me the most in a dire situation.

That's a perfectly valid way to respond, but not the only way. Thanks ^_^

Ah come on, Chevelle is good. *siiigh* I'm only a mild punk fan, I do like a bit of hip-hop, and classical is always nice too.

Likkle, I'm afraid those songs don't go any deeper than "I like them and like them enough to be able to listen to them over and over." There's not a lot of meaning to it. :?

This sort of stuff happens to me at art galleries. "What deeper meaning do you get from this?" "Ummm, it's pretty?" or "That guy must like blue" are typical responses. I'm not a very self-examining person.

Eh, in no particular order, and still a couple short at the moment... this is kinda my draft list so far.

1. 3 Libras - APC
2. Every Thug Needs A Lady - Alkaline Trio
3. Duvet - bôa
4. Suck - NIN
5. The Great Below - NIN
6. Creep - Radiohead
7. We Shout - t.A.T.u.
8. Spark - Tori Amos
9. Sober - Tool
10. Swamp Song - Tool
11. Drunk Again - Reel Big Fish

Reasons:

1. This song means a lot to me, it expresses perfectly the disappointment of not being understood as a whole person. Few people in life bother to get to know each other deeply enough to say they know someone; mostly we just judge each other... I hate that.
2. One of my favourite tracks right now, I've picked it because it makes me smile.
3. Sometimes I sit on the bus and cry while listening to this song, it echoes a recurring dream.
4. Not sure about this one, might switch it for another, one of my favourite Nine Inch Nails songs... forbidden feelings I guess.
5. I listened to this song a lot after Sarah died (for those of you who don't know, Sarah was my best friend for two years... I fucking hate cancer) and it still helps give me a sense of peace.
6. Because I know at the back of my mind that I'm a selfish person and I don't deserve to be loved. Good one to listen to when you've done something you shouldn't have and want to feel bad about yourself for a while before wrapping yourself up in the pretence of self-worth that gets you through the average day.
7. Don't we all dream of someone feeling the same way about us that we feel about them? When you love, you should love with everything you are, even if that scares people.
8. I keep coming back to this song because it says a lot about the way I feel inside. Fear and determination.
9. Being honest with yourself is probably the hardest part of living.
10. In life we often get into situations that we can't deal with, blundering in without thinking through the consequences. We trust people who aren't trustworthy, we speak when we should remain silent, and remain silent when we should speak. I spend most of my life dancing in quicksand.
11. I say the wrong things, I push people until they walk away, and I genuinely scare myself sometimes... being drunk has both literal and metaphorical significance to me in this song.

Nothing wrong with that, music means different things to different people. Enjoyment is as valid a reason as any. And self-examination is over-rated, people are happier if they leave themselves alone.

I absolutely love that song.

(I hate to be thought of as one who nit-picks, but it should be "bôa". "BoA" is a Korean singer. I made the mistake myself and got corrected, that's how I know. :) )

That's deep, Likkle. I guess I feel the same way, come to think of it. "Pretence of self-worth that gets you through the average day". If that's not a quote then you are just better with words than I could ever hope to be.
