Serenity
Has anyone seen this? We all love sci-fi, but was it any good? I never saw any of the show it's based on. Comments?

Jabar, a friend of mine, went to see Flightplan with his wife and after it she wanted to go gamble. So, he figured he would pop into one of the other theaters and watch another movie for free, like he always does. So, he went and watched Serenity and didn't like it very much at all. AND HE IS A HUGE SCI-FI GUY! HUGE. So, I'm guessing it sucks, but no plans on seeing it right now.
Hmmm, since this is here already I'm going to use it to express how unhappy I am about this film.
Now I love Firefly... the characters, the action, the humour, the romance, etc. were all just spot on for me. I felt like someone had given me a brand new toy to play with and I was all warm and happy and... shiny ^_^
So, then I have the film to watch and I'm thinking it'll be good, I'm going to have a good time, I'm going to enjoy myself.
I was wrong.
I could forgive it for being little more than a feature length episode. I could forgive it for lacking the same degree of energy that was in the series. I could even forgive it for being blatantly dumbed down to spoon-feed the audience at every step.
What I can't and won't forgive is the way it left me feeling like absolute shit after watching it. It was dull, depressing, and generally shit on the series from a great height. And the saddest part is that it COULD have been fantastic - some of the ideas in it were really good, just poorly executed. And they did something that I really didn't like and won't forgive.
If you love the series this film is disappointing and upsetting. If you haven't seen Firefly... the film has no depth to it.
My advice? Buy the series, pretend the film doesn't exist.

I enjoyed Serenity. I was angry about Wash, but ultimately I was glad that Joss was allowed to come back and do something again in the Firefly universe. Best case scenario would've been if the show had never veen cancelled. But we all know what happened and that's what I'm most angry about. Fox cancels too many great shows (Arrested Development). If you didn't like Serenity, then watch the Serenity outtakes. Those are hilarious.

Yeah, I heard Fox cancelled it after airing 11 episodes out of sequence *shakes head* plus it got shifted to make way for sport... how typical.
Weezer hit the nail on the head with the whole death of Wash thing. I watched the series on DVD, so I saw them in order, and the first thing I fell in love with was the scene where he's playing with the plastic dinosaurs. His death left me seriously not caring what happened in the rest of the film - everyone could've died after that point and I wouldn't have felt any worse.
Book's death made sense, in terms of the story and the character; sure it left loose ends about his past but I liked that.
I desperately want another series (I've joined the campaign) but how can you have a series without Wash?
The dead world thing was predicatable but interesting. Sadly the promotional pictures for the film made it obvious that River would survive the onslaught with the Reavers, which made it all rather dull after Wash's death because you just knew how it was going to go.
I have a lot of minor gripes... most of which are more a compliment to how fantastic the series is because I make the comparison and the series wins every time. Film compared to series: the humour is flatter, interactions between some of the characters are a little off (particularly at the beginning of the film, I was sat there thinking 'what the hell's wrong with Mal?'), actually the characters seemed to be missing the depth and interplay that made the series so great - the only one who didn't suffer from this was Jayne and that's only because his character was so simple in the first place, it just felt like all of a sudden everything is being bent out of shape to serve the plot, and since when did Simon personally go to rescue his sister? Are we really meant to suppose that the Alliance is not only evil but stupid with it? Sure sure, it took me two years to get to her and then I just slapped on a uniform and waltzed right in without so much as a fake moustache? Also I think Mr Universe was cast poorly... and the Reavers weren't nearly as horrifying as they seemed in the series.
I'll be honest though, I would've forgiven all of this if only Wash hadn't died - and so pointlessly! Because now I feel like not only will there be no second series, but even if there was - it would lack something special and important. I feel betrayed (and I'm not the only one - the massive campaign to get this changed before the final release was amazing).
So, for me, (and I realise not everyone feels this way - if you loved the film then lucky you) the only value of the film is to draw attention to the series.
P.S. And you're right Weezer - the outtakes were hilarious.

i have sentimental attachment to 90210, since i was in high school at the same time. But yeah, it was never vindictive, they were kids going to school and dealing with social issues, gfs/bfs, parents, etc. I identified with them, esp. David(cause we were both rappers trying to find our niche.)
