hacking
I just heard on CNN that over 150,000 xboxs have been used as computers by "hackers" all you need is a keyboard, mouse, bigger harddrive and a couple other things and you got yourself a computer for under 400 bucks, m$ isnt so happy about it, but thats what you get for building a computer and calling it a game system.

I heard about that also. Linux guys have been hacking their boxes for a while. Xbox live won't work on these hacked boxes, however.
The box is more than a computer. It is much more customized to gaming, and doesn't have to have all the Windows things running in the background. Is it an actual customized console.

You're believing CNN?
These are the same people that on Monday showed footage of Super Mario Bros. 3 and the guy right in front of the tv says:
"Oh yeah, this one's from Nintendo. I think it's Mario 64."
And oh yeah, it was showing the title screen. There was no blue screen effect, he stood right in front of the tv and the damn thing popped up with the SMB3 title screen, he turned around to look at it and he seriously called it Mario 64.
While I don't doub that there are a few people hacking with xboxes, it's probably not too many people. You'd need some really hardcore programming/hacking skills and you'd also have to be able to dodge MS's lawyers pretty well. I'm not really worried about it b/c as soon as they get on Xbox Live, they're toast. And if they're not on XBL, then I don't have to worry about them.

x-hack
a couple buddies of mine have hacked versions of older versions of x-boxes. They have an extra harddrive isntalled and some other crap doneto em. They have MAME (arcade emulator), and other emulators installed..plus they rent games and copy them to the hard drive (no load times and free...can't really beat that)..
i won't get an x-box and do it to it though .
although it sounded tempting.

Yeah, its just a modified version of Windows. I believe its using the Win2k/XP kernel. Its just been optimized for games. Nothing running in the background and stuff like that. It was also customized for the hardware.
Basically, its a version of Windows that has been optimized for the Xbox hardware, and to play games.
Am I right, Mighty Bean?

Don't know if anyone will see this, but one of my friends down here has a modded Xbox. 120GB hard drive, MAME Emulator, and tons of old school games as well as Xbox. Cost him a pretty penny tho, 250 just for the mod. No need for games as they're all on the hard drive as well. I'm not for or against it, but it's pretty cool. Actually, I haven't even been able to play it yet. I really want to play some old arcade double dragons on it. I'd do is just to have a ton of old arcade games, but I hear the buttons are mapped really weird for the old arcade games.
I'll be damned if I ever get beat by a button masher!!!
