Nintendo DS Games

Post by Wrath »

I'm surprised there's no talk of any DS games here. I was a little worried about the DS's rather small list of games early on, but the system is really taking off now. Nintendo is about to go online this week finally with Mario Kart and Tony Hawk, both of which look amazing. There are also a lot of other games out or just around the corner.

There's actually a lot of great games to get now and look foreword to:
Mario Kart DS
Super Mario bros.
Castlevania
Metroid Prime Hunters
Metroid Prime Binball
Kerby Canvass Curse
Meteos
Warioware Touched

And quite a few rather inovative interesting ones:
Feel the Magic
Trama Center
That lawyer game I forget the name of at the moment.
Lost in Blue
Nintendogs

Anyone a DS fan, own a DS, or are really thinking of getting one like I am? I've been holding out for a while, but I really want one now. Problem is, I can't afford a new one right now. I'd love to find a trade-in deal, cheap one online, or something. Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

I'm really glad the DS is taking off because I'm glad Nintendo's attempt at trying something different in the industry is paying off. That's why I'm also excited about the Revolution. They're not just trying to improve graphically, on the same games we've been playing for the past 2 generations.

Thoughts?

I play my DS far more than I play my PSP, and that's with having a bunch of homebrew apps and emus on my PSP. Castlevania is easily the best game on any handheld system right now, and would give Symphony of the Night a run for its money if it weren't somewhat shorter. Meteos, while not quite as hypnotizing as creating company Q Entertainment's PSP entry, Lumines, is just as addictive, and is a must-play for any true puzzle afficianado. I bought Nintendogs when it came out, (what? they're cute!) and although I've traded it in because I just didn't play it much anymore, I was highly entertained by the realism and interactivity for a good month.

Those are the American games I have (or had), but I've had some others temporarily through GameFly. Trauma Center is hella fun as well, requiring you to perform surgery with precision and quickness. I've played the final version of Mario Kart, and I can say that its release tomorrow will only further solidify Nintendo's handheld-hold on the holiday season. Anyone who has ever been a fan of Mario Kart needs to at least put this on their Christmas lists, if not go out and buy it tomorrow. (Which might be a good solution, Wrath: ask for a DS for Christmas? Maybe ask for the red DS + Mario Kart bundle?)

Now of course, the DS lifespan hasn't all been this wonderful. Wario Ware, in my opinion, was half-assed and trite. Having far fewer games than any other WW game, and a good portion of them ripped directly from other WW games, Touched left me feeling like I was playing a halfway finished game. I traded it in 5 days later. Lunar seems to be a big disappointment so far, promising turn-based RPG goodness but adding new pointless difficulties like not being able to earn plunder and experience from battles simultaneously.

Here is a list of every DS planned release mentioned so far, and boy is it long. This list, though half consisting of probably Japan-only releases, really should have Sony quaking in its boots. Hell, they've stolen away a few of Sony's once-exclusive franchises! Xenosaga, Katamari, 3D Final Fantasy, a Kojima game, Burnout, Shin Megami Tensei all are salt on Sony's wounds, and scoring things that even Sony couldn't get, like a Square-Enix sports game, an online Dynasty Warriors, and a Team Ninja project, are a death knell for the PSP unless something changes.

Sony lacks the innovation to counter Nintendo, and they lack the iniative & financial backing to battle & defend against Microsoft. They're still riding the waves of success of the original Playstation, and unless they change their tune, they're in serious trouble.

Doesn't matter if there's nothing good to play. Sure, there's a GTA and Infected and a few other cool projects down the line, but nothing I'm really excited about. Pursuit Force looks kinda cool... And maybe Crisis Core. Other than that, the whole upcoming library looks kinda meh to me. The DS, on the other hand, has like, 20 titles I'm excited about.

Which would you rather get? A console with better graphics and 2 games you really want, or a console with not as good graphics but 20 games you really want? (And for nearly half the price, to boot.)

Just recently picked up Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrows, which is pretty amazing.

Some other DS titles not mentioned that I want...

Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble
Sonic Rush
Dig Dug: Dig Strike
Trace Memory
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers
Electroplankton
Super Princess Peach
Final Fantasy III
Resident Evil Deadly Silence
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Super Monkey Ball: Touch and Roll
Children of Mana
Bleach (by Treasure!)
Harvest Moon: Rune Factory
Where Do Babies Come From? (Feel the Magic 2)
Jump Superstars
Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan
Band Brothers
GuruGuru Nagetto

I just recently read that there might be a chance that Squre-Enix might release a version of Final Fantasy VII on DS. That'd be pretty sweet.

Yeah, the PSP graphics are pretty amazing considering it's all in your hands, but right now the DS really has the best handheld considering their lineup of games that the PSP has failed to offer as of yet. I am positive that the PSP will release some tight games next year. Which sucks that we have to wait, cause playing games on that hawt LCD screen makes me drool. They really should have planned for a few BIG title releases for the holiday season. All we got was GTA.

GTA is a fun game for on the go though. I like it.

Here's a list of PSP releases in the future. Granted, this is just as unofficial as the DS list I posted earlier, but like I said, there's just very few must-have titles on this list. *shrug*

Agreed, and if I didn't mention it already, Sonic Rush looks very fun too. There's a few games in that upcoming list of games I'd love to play.

I haven't followed the PSP games as much, but I check in to see what's coming out every so often, and there's not really too many games that even look very interesting to me. The screen is very nice yes, but that's the whole trouble with gaming today. Everyone's so pumped about graphics. I mean the next generation, except for Nintendo, what reason do Sony and Microsoft have for a new console, graphics. Their controllers are damn near similar. The types of games are pretty similar, etc.

I want some inovation in gameplay, whether it be new types of games, new types of input, output, enemy AI, etc. So far Nintendo's delivering quite nicely with their handheld, and I can't wait to see the Revolution.

And graphics? Some of my favorite games ever are 8 bit Nintendo games, which I still play today, so no, that doesn't matter.

Well, I couldn't wait for Christmas, which I knew I wouldn't be getting a DS anyway. I picked up the red Mario Kart bundle, and I have to say, I haven't had so much fun for a long time. I picked it up toward the beginning of December, and still can't put the system down.

Mario Kart is truely the best one in the series yet, aside from a few retro trakcs I didn't care for much. There's just so much content in this game it's crazy. And on the first try, I got my DS connected to my router, where I proceeded to get spanked quite nicely online.

Since then, I rented and picked up a couple other games. I rented Warioware and Kerby, which I've played before on my friend's system. Kerby is fun, and a great take on the traditional platformer, but for some reason, I just can't get into it as much as I'd like. Maybe if I see if for $10, I'll grab it.

I also agree with Warioware. I loved the original, and am still addicted to Twisted, the best one of them all. Touched seems lacking though and just isn't as fun, and for some reason, I suck at this version. I still have to laugh though at the song playing on Ashly's set of games. Catchy, and I've actually been caught humming it later.

I also picked up Tony Hawk, but haven't gotten to play much due to being addicted to Kart. It seems solid, although the lack of a graffitti mode really makes me angry. That's the only mode my friends and I would play on the other games.

I just picked up Sonic Rush yesterday too, and it's a very sweet game. The graphics are very nice, speed is insane, and some of the music is very catchy, first zone especially. One thing though, this game is fuckin' hard, or I suck. I'm actually having trouble with zone 2. The second level is kicking my ass, but I've always hated the Sonic water levels. Still a great game, and I don't regret my purchase at all.
