st. anger
i just bought St. Anger, the new cd from Metallica. fricken awesome. it's some of the best stuff they've done in a long time. pounding, gritty, and loud. i love it. the St. Anger music video is pretty cool too,Yahoo has it, check it out. i think this album might really put Metallica back on top. it rocks.
I have spoken.

Its definately a step in the right direction. I'm a big fan or Metallica around the Master of Puppets days. I'd really like to see them go back to that.
The recording quality is a little interesting. Lars' snare drum sounds next to atrocious. Very twangy. It bothers my ears, now maybe I'll get used to it. But, after hearing Chad Sexton's (311) snare and then going to this new CD, it was gut wrenching.
Some of the lyrics make me laugh, and they aren't supposed to be funny. "Your lifestyle chooses your deathstyle."
Like I said, it is a step in the right direction. And, I like it. I just have a few gripes, and I hope they even them out.
Overall, a good pick up for someone that wants a heavy, gritty, CD.

i agree with the lyrics, some of them are a little lame, but i totally disagree about the snare. i think it's awesome. i think lars must have gone through a few drum sets making this cd, but i really like how the guitars and drums almost seem to compete with each other. all a matter of opinion.

I went back through some of the classic metallica discs and compared the different snare tones. He had a pretty standard sounding snare throughout most of the career. His new snare tends to have the sound of one that doesn't have a zero ring placed on top of it. They keep that nasty ring out. Either that, or his snare is tighter than hell.
The gritty feel of the album does tend to make it seem that this sound was intential, and its not bothering me quite as much as it was before. It was just a little shocking, since most drummers do so many things to avoid that twang sound.
I really liked the vocals. A good mix of melodic singing, to a more traditional metal style.
Overall, though, this album is really good. It seems like they've put their worst days behind them (Load and Reload,) and gone back to their roots. Although not entirely. This album is still very different from their beginnings, but still very true to them at the same time. One of their heaviest, if not their heaviest, offerings to date. One of my favorite things about Metallica was their amazing guitar solos from the Master of Puppets days. The solo on the title track (Master of Puppets) is still one of my favorites to date. A small gripe, though, because I can always listen to their earlier stuff if I want to hear that. They've grown, and that is what's important.
The lyrics aren't as bad as I thought. Really that deathstyle line is the only one that bothered me. One of the better metal releases and a while, and will hopefully show some of the current "metal" generation (Limp Bizkit for example) how it should be done.
I don't know if any of you are Sepultura fans, but they released a new live album called "Under a Pale Grey Sky." It is their last concert with the original lineup, and is basically a greatest hits album (2 discs). Albeit a live one. The songs they play of Arise have some of the best metal drumming I have ever heard. Deadly accuracy on some insanely hard licks. An absolute treat to hear. Igor is the man!
While I'm on the subject...

Ok, sorry, hehe, no one does metal better than Metallica and Sepultura in my opinion.
