Above you see my darling Video Game Collection. Tonight we packed
up all my PlayStation and earlier games and systems for our trek to the
city of Angels. Looking at all my old cartridges of Chrono Trigger,
Final Fantasy III, Mega Man 2, Legend of Zelda, and others brought
tears to my eyes. These are the physical objects that I touched and
built such a bond with that left such an emotional impression on me.
It made me think of something people used to tell me all the time.
”Someday you’ll regret spending so much time playing Video Games.”
The exact opposite is true. All my best memories are playing games with one of my best
friends or alone. I wish I had played more games as a child.
Video Games are not some simple toy to be shrugged off and thought
of as mindless entertainment, but are delightful works of art that one
can enjoy both in the present and in memories to come. For example,
looking at Chrono Trigger I can remember the game, but also wonderful
memories of friends that I discussed the game with. The game’s story
also opened my mind up to many creative new ideas and worlds I never
would have otherwise. Games are just as worthwhile, albeit sometimes
for different reasons, as books or movies.
I am ever so glad that I spent so much times with games, and only
wish I’d have spent more. These cartridges and discs represent
pictures that I can peer into to view times in my life that I
absolutely love to look back on. I remember the game, the music, and
the wonderful times both social and solitary that the games inspired.
Man, fuck the outside. Aren’t there bears out there?
