Happy New Year, bitches.

Right.  New Year’s resolutions and all that.  So no more "bitches" and no more "motherfuckers".  No more "your mom" and no more "that’s what she said."  Ok, actually, plenty of "that’s what she said," that shit never gets old.

But in case you haven’t discerned by now, I have made a New Year resolution, and that is to be a kinder, gentler RurouniQ.  My new motto is "Peace, love, and videogames" and I’m sticking to it.  Now I know what you’re thinking.  You’re thinking "Q, there’s no way you’ll be able to stick with that.  You’ll break this resolution of yours in days."  Well for one, I find your lack of faith disturbing.  For another, I can prove to you that I’m serious by not calling you a sisterbanging cockmudgeon for your backtalk.  See?  I’m not calling you that.  Totally serious about this.

In either case, 2008 looks to be like it’ll be a banner year for games.  Of course, we say this every year, but perhaps it would be better to say that 2008 will not let us down at all.  For example, here are some of the games I’m looking foward to this year:

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PS360Wii):  Let me get this straight.  I get to be a Sith apprentice assassin student of Vader with enough power to fell a Star Destroyer in a game that has online Wii lightsaber-swinging multiplayer?  Count me in.

Ghostbusters (every console known to man):   Not so excited about the Wii version, but the PS3 and 360 versions look absolutely gorgeous, and the DS version sounds like a remake of the Apple II Ghostbusters franchise business simulator I used to play to death as a kid.  I expect to lose lots of time on this franchise in ’08.

Soul Calibur 4 (PS360):   My favorite fighting game franchise gets a next-gen online-enabled sequel.  Sounds like a recipe for win to me.  Personally, I’m hoping they’ll throw in the character generator system from SCIII and the conquest system from SCII Arcade.

LittleBigPlanet (PS3):  Sure I’m not a big Sony fan, but this is a game in which you build platform games.  It’s the dream of anyone who’s ever written down their own Super Mario Bros. levels on graph paper (which would be me).  This plus Home will probably be the reasons I eventually own a PS3.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii):  I don’t think I need to explain this one.  If you don’t have your panties in a bunch over this game, there’s something wrong with you.  Even sick-in-the-head doubters need only remind themselves that Snake and Sonic are present to remember that there’s something for everyone in this game… even them.

Star Trek Online (PC):  Not that this will probably be out in 2008, but I’m at least hoping it goes beta.  I’m also hoping it’s more World of Warcraft than Pirates of the Caribbean Online.  There’s certainly a lot of possibility with the IP, especially considering that so far it’s the only announced official post-Nemesis canon (20 years after, to be precise).

Spore (PC):  I can make a creature with asses for eyes and evolve it into a full-thriving civilization that will actually menace other players who are also online.  Asses for eyes!  Visionary!  (So to speak.)

WoW: Wrath of the Lich King (PC):   The newest World of Warcraft expansion ups the level cap to 80 and adds a new profession, the Death Knight hero class, and a whole slew of new areas, not to mention a modest graphics upgrade.  I’m probably the only BMX community member who gives a damn, but you know me, I likes me some WoW.

Of course, this is just a small list of the exciting games for 2008, and isn’t even everything that I’m particularly excited about.  There’s also Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, Brütal Legend, Penny Arcade Adventures, Fallout 3, GTAIV, Mario Kart Wii, Castle Crashers, XBLA releases of Rez and Ikaruga, Disgaea 3, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Lost Odyssey, Lego Indiana Jones, No More Heroes, both of the new Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles…

Honestly I could go on.  There’s even more games I could list, and some I would if I were more sure they’d be coming out this year.  As it is, it’s a pretty robust list that doesn’t leave much to be desired… Hell, even Duke Nukem Forever has a good shot at coming out this year.  What’s next, Halo DS?  (Please let it be Halo DS.)

So, to sum up.  2008 = good.  I know that it’s going to be an important year for breakmanx.com, a very important year for me personally, and a year of great gaming all around.  So here’s to a bright future for all of us, and may your controllers be responsive.
