Vanquish is the latest game from game designer Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil and worked on hits such as Viewtiful Joe and Devil May Cry. After leaving Capcom in 2007, Mikami formed his own studio, Straight Story, and is working with Platinum Games on the project.
Vanquish shares a lot of similar art elements with one his previous works, P.N.0.3. The game features a very metallic setting with white being a main color, making it easy to distinguish enemies who are dressed in red. The E3 demo plopped me right in the middle of a battlefield. Chaos and gunfire surrounded me as I panic to learn the controls and take cover. It’s clear that it takes a lot of inspiration from other 3rd person cover based shooters. The controls and sensitivity definitely need some work. I found my aiming to be all over the place and it took me quite a few tries to actually plot my cross hairs on the enemies. All in all the combat was a blast and the constant gunfire and chaos kept me on my toes as I made my way through the level.
After fighting what seemed like a sea of red enemies a giant spider like creature attacked.I found this boss battle to be very similar to those found in lost planet. There were several red points on the enemy where he could take damage. One you blew up that portion of his body he would fall over and reveal his main target to hit. Rinse and repeat attacking the red spots and you’ve got him beat.
Vanquish will be out in October. It’s definitely a game to keep your eyes on.
