Activision is having a very good week.  After data showing that Battlefield 3 has failed to top both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on XBox LIVE the last few weeks, they just go and throw more sand in EA’s face.  The latest release in the Call of Duty franchise, Modern Warfare 3, has broken the record for day-one sales in video games, which means they’re sitting on three titles now that have been the biggest entertainment releases ever.  Analysts suspect that the title topped $400 million dollars in sales, with sales of around 6.5M copies of the game going out.

Game industry members are always keen to point out how much greater this is than the highest grossing weekend for video games primary entertainment competitors: movies.  However, before everyone thinks that video games are killing Hollywood, remember that the average movie ticket price is around $7.89 (not in LA, though), and a shiny new copy of Call of Duty will set you back $60.  But I digress; congratulations Activision on another massive launch, and congratulations Infinity Ward for surviving the turmoil that engulfed it last year.

Now just stop being so damn mean to EA.
