After the dreadful Devil May Cry 4 way back in 2008, Capcom had nowhere but up to go with the new Devil May Cry. Has Ninja Theory succeeded?

The combat is as smooth as ever even if Dante’s abilities haven’t changed much between all of the games in the series. He can can still slash and combo his enemies with a variety of sword, gun, and aerial attacks. This time around Dante is able to switch between three different styles on the fly. The trigger buttons represent both the demon and angel sides of Dante respectively, and holding each trigger while pressing one of the face buttons changes the attack according to the style. For example, the X button allows Dante to shoot, but when holding down the left trigger to enable angel style, the shooting ability turns into a hookshot for grabbing ledges or getting closer to enemies. Having a variety of attacks and styles makes you feel like a badass when controlling Dante, and the action always feels fresh and exciting.

The enviroments and characters design have that lush and vivid Ninja Theory look to them, but are littered with dark grays and reds. I miss the arrays of colors used in previous Ninja THeory games such as Enslaved. All in all, DMC looks and plays like a solid Devil May Cry title, but it just doesn’t have that special something that makes it stand out from the sea of video that will be releasing this year. If you’re looking for a good Devil May Cry game, DMC will deliver that, but nothing more.
